1930s
A Star is Born
Born during the Depression of the 1930's, James Dean's
early life seems unaffected by the squalor that many who lived during
this period of time experienced. Where entire families traveled
across the country looking for any prospect of a job they could
find, the Dean's were considerably stable. Winton Dean, Jimmy's
father, worked for the governent as a dentist, first in Marion,
Indiana (Jimmy's birthplace) and then in West Hollywood, California.
Jimmy's early years are significant in that his mother,
Mildred, was alive and gave him the love and the dreams that would
drive Jimmy for the rest of his life.

- Winton Dean and Mildred Wilson meet at a dance and begin dating.

| July 26,
1930 - Winton and Mildred obtain a
marriage licence and are married three days later by the Reverend
Emma Payne. Mildred is three months pregnant. |
| 1931 |
| February
8, 1931 - James Byron Dean is born
at home in Green Gables Apartments, Marion, Indiana, US at 2:00
am weighing 8 pounds, 10 ounces. Cost of delivery, $15 US. Named
after James Amick, chief dental officer at Marion Veteran's
Hospital (where Winton worked) and Thomas Byron Vice, Winton's
best friend. Astrological sign: Aquarius. |
| 1933 |
| July 5,
1933 - Winton quits his position at
Marion Veteran's Hospital and moves his family to Marcus and
Ortense Dean Winslow's farm in Fairmount, Indiana, US. Raises
bullfrogs. Shortly thereafter he moves the family back to Marion.

| June 7,
1935 - Winton is transfered to Sawtelle
Veteran's Hospital in West Los Angeles, California, US and moves
the family to Santa Monica, California. |
| 1936 |
| September,
1936 - Jimmy enrolls at the McKinley
School. Jimmy takes violin and tap dancing lessons. |
| No Date
- Mildred reads poetry and performs plays
with Dean. At night they play the "wishing game."
Dean writes a wish on a piece of paper, slips it under his pillow.
Mildred sneaks in at night at tries to fulfill Dean's wish the
next morning. |
