In order to teach students the responsibilities of rasing a baby, Flatpoints sex education instructor gives each girl a real baby. Jerri can't hand the baby back until she learns the most valuable lesson a girl can learn about single motherhood. It's only after Jerri, sharing a baby with another girl, becomes jealous of her partner's focus on the kid and starts acting like a abusive boyfriend that she realizes what the lesson is. Jerri is giving a baby boy whom she calls "Dizzy". Jerri has had several babies only none were carried to full term. Jerri takes Dizzy to the playground and when her friends call her to go with them she leaves Dizzy there, the next day she is called in by the principal who is holding Dizzy in his arms. Dizzy was found by two teachers at the park at night, Jerri asks, "Why were these two in the park at that time?" (good question) The principal and health teacher give Dizzy back to Jerri this time she gets help, in a bizzare twist of events this girl is high on drugs and wants to sell Dizzy. The plot is expose and Jerri learns is was easier to take care of Dizzy when she was not a mother and just a father (well learned lesson)
Quote from the Episode
"HI"
Jerri Answers: "Is that how they say Hi! in Whoreville"
My thoughts on the Episode
This is a good episode for Jerri to be what she doesn't want to be a mother. After all she is just in high school (so what if is a few years later. This episode is filled with absured ideology, and in this context it works.
Comedy Central has renamed this episode it is now called "Dreams on the Rocks"
Jerri's step mother embarrasses her with drunken displays in public. Jerri may lose the lead role in the school play. In their new production of "A Rasin in the Sun" Jerri's step-mom is jealous of her step daughter success and her drinking causes Jerri to go to where she can blame parents who drink.
Jerri is faced with the dilemma of whether to be loyal to her lockermate, or play by rules of the school--and rat her out. The girl is retarded and Jerri must rat on her to go to Fun City to get laid.
(This is the first show) Eager to fit in, Jerri Blank, a 46 year old high school freshman, makes drugs for the most popular girl.
Jerri tries to get her classmates to come to a party she's throwing, but is cruelly rejected until the extremely sensitive art teacher, Mr. Jellineck, tells her to "Dig deep inside and see what makes you unique--dig around like a badger in a trash can and go with what you know!" So Jerri mixes up a batch crank for the homecoming queen, Poppie, who promptly OD's when she thinks she is a bee and must get back to the hive and tries to go through a small keyhole. Then Jerri's decides to dedicate the part to her memory and gets a full house. Now Jerri has lots of friends including her Turtle. Eventually Jerri throws the party and some of her classmates taste the drug and her turtle gets killed. Jerri will get some sympathy after all.
My thoughts on the Episode
Well they had to start somewhere and this is the first episode. It sets up the story line for the series, though some ideas were dropped later on. We learn that Jerri's real mom dies when Jerri took off 32 yes ago and Jerri keeps her in an urn (this is the only time so far we have seen her talking to mom this way) and meet her step-brother who lives to irrate Jerri. Her real Dad who is the best family member she has and her step mom. I think this is the weakest episode so far, the drug angle while cute is not essential, and in future shows not mention. This espiode while funny is not for the most part, the Poppie killing herself and Jerri pulling the plug in the hospital are bits that act as a downer. Possible Amy and the others realized this an concentrated more on the insane concept and changed a few things. This is the only episode that has Jerri interested in a man, which is sort of out of character, so in the end, a so-so show.
"This second time through high school, I'm a little wiser. I'm still doing the the wrong things, but at least I'm doing them the right way." --Jerri Blank
Jerri falls for a transfer student and later discovers the terrible secret that will keep them apart forever. It is Arbor Day and Jerri has planted a tree. The Sadie Hawkins dance is around the corner and Jerri has asked the new transfer to the dance. In a romantic setting (the drive in and they are in a golf cart) Jerri discovers this is her son she gave up for a guitar in Florida. But this is not the new start for they but aparting. And in the end Jerri chops the tree down, (Airdate: June 14, 1999)
Flatpoint High is up in arms to find 'whodunit' after someone scrawls a racial slur on the wall" (Airdate: June 21, 1999)
Jerri finds her calling on the debate team, but can she make it through the dangerous physical training for the big competition? (Airdate: June 29, 1999)
This is probably this best espisode so far out of the ten that will be shown this season. This episode has things in it that are different from the other epsiodes, Principal Blackman is seen only in the opening and end credits which is unusal. The message board outside the school is not shown in the beginning. Jerri's family is in this epsiode more than all the other epsiodes combined. Jerri is back to liking girls more than guys. We see in this epsiode that Geoffrey Jellineck art teacher and single parent is the only one on the show who actually cares to be a friend to Jerri, he is the one who confronts the parents about Jerri's lack of love from the family. In the end Jerri does not make the debating team but gains respect of her family. The meat man bit is not funny and sort of detracts from the epsiode.
