HOSPITAL MEETING
When Wally Kurth (Ned, GENERAL HOSPITAL) first met Rena Sofer (ex-Lois, GH) back in 1993, he had no idea - not even an inkling - that they would one day fall madly in love, marry and have a child!
�����After all, the couple was as wildly mismatched on screen as they were off. As viewers remember, Lois was a young, brash woman from Brooklyn, and Ned was an old-money, stick-in-the-mud Quartermaine. No one excect maybe the writers - could have predicted these characters could fall for each other and go on to become one of GH's most popular supercouples ever. Behind the scenes, their coupling was just as unexpected. Kurth, a seasoned soap vet, was a Montana native ho had a pre-teenaged daughter named Meghann from a previous marriage. Sofer, a newcomer to GH, was an-and-coming young actress who had grown up in New York, the daughter of a New Jersey-based Orthodox Rabbi.
�����Although they kept their relationship under wraps most of the time, they eventually went public. While their alter egos married in New York City's Coney Island in June 1995, the couple took their vows for real on March 31, 1996 in Big Sky, Montana, not far from Kurth's boyhood home. Sofer's dad participated in the ceremony which - coincidentally - took place the same weekend that the Unabomber was discovered in Montana.
�����But luckily for them, Unabomber or not, their wedding went off without a soap-style hitch in sight. Soon afterwards, the couple welcomed their daughter Rosabel, now nearly three years old, into the world.
�����"Rosabel is great," Sofer told fans at a recent appearance. "I just got back from a trip to New York and she came with me - and now I need a vacation. She's as smart as a whip, very mature. She has her own mind."
�����The couple lives in the San Fernando Valley area of L.A., and is extremely supportive of each other's careers. In fact, Kurth has nothing but praise for his wife's primetime career - and he says he's never jealous of her love scenes with other men, including GH graduate Jack Wagner (ex-Frisco), who played Peter, Eve's husband, on MELROSE PLACE.
�����"Jack who?" says Kurth, with a smile. And although Sofer is equally understanding when it comes to Kurth's work-related love scenes, she doubts Lois would be as forgiving if she caught Ned fooling around. "If that happened," Sofer explains, "Lois would take out a gun and kill everyone in sight. She'd have sex with Ned, and then kill him," she concludes, laughing.
Is Lois Ever Coming Back?
That's the question fans are always asking. When Sofer's primetime show MELROSE PLACE was canceled, rumor had it that Lois would be making a return visit to Port Charles. But that doesn't seem likely now that Sofer is committed to starring on the upcoming fall ABC comedy OH GROW UP! However, word has it that Lois and Ned's daughter Brooke Lynn may be returning to Port Charles any day now! However, if Lois were to return to GH, you can bet Kurth would welcome it. "It's a Godsend, a blessing, that I was able to work with somebody that I am intimately involved with off screen," Kurth has told Update in the past.
