his lady succeeded her sister Mary as
Countess on Mary’s death in Mar 1661. She was esteemed the
greatest heiress and finest woman of her time. The couple were
created Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch on their marriage. While
his Grace’s honours (both English and Scottish) were deemed
forfeit on his execution, those enjoyed by the Duchess (Dukedom
of Buccleuch by creation and Earldom of Buccleuch by inheritance)
