harles III, the Simple (879-929), King of France, posthumous son of Louis II. When his brother Carloman died Charles was too young to reign, and Eudes or Odo, Count of Paris, usurped the French crown. But Charles was nevertheless crowned at Rheims in 893, and after the death of Eudes became actual king over the whole of France. The most important event of his reign is the peace he concluded with the Normans in 911, by which he ceded to their chief the lower valley of the Seine - i.e. Normandy - as a hereditary dukedom.
