Henry Beaufort (1377-1447), English cardinal, natural son of John of Gaunt by Catherine, widow of Sir Hugh Swynford. He was thrice chancellor. In 1431 he conducted the young king, Henry VI, to France, to be crowned in Paris as king of France and England. [World Wide Illustrated Encyclopedia, 1935]


Ordained and appointed Dean of Wells in 1397; Bishop of Lincoln in 1398. Promoted to Chancellor of Oxford University and Bishop of Winchester in 1405. Chancellor of England. Cardinal-Priest of Saint Eusebius in 1426. He was also legat a latere in Hungary, Bohemia and the Empire.
