SKAGWAY
Changing Threads
Rushin' Tailor
were Two shops and one specialised in theme fabrics endemic to the area - florals (forget-me-nots, the state flower), fauna and vegetation, totem poles and Russian Zhostovo inspired fabrics. I had a lovely time in these two shops, doing a bit of damage to the credit card. The shops were both great with fabrics, stacks of patterns and little nick-nacks.

Two shops at Salmon Landing near where the cruise ship docked.
One of them especially was very helpful and I bought some more fabric and patterns there. Can't remember the name of the other one but it was well-stocked < with fabrics and patterns. p>

LOS ANGELES AREA

M&L Fabric Warehouse
3430 W Ball Road, Anaheim.
1)This is Disneyland for Fabricaholics. Sooooo Cheap! Leave the kids at the real thing down the road.
2) I should have made this my first stop as the place was huge. They had every kind of fabric in it, but mainly cottons. The prices on the cottons ranged from $1.98 (Debbie Mumm) to $7.89 per yard for the cottons. They had an extensive range of flannel fabric as well for $2.49 a yard. Needless to say I am home now and broke, but had lots of fun.

Santa Monica

Crazy Ladies
The ladies in the shop were very helpful to this dear man who only knows one end of a sewing needle from the other when it pricks him, they made him feel very welcome and made useful suggestions when trying to work out the list that I had sent.
The good oil from Andrew is that the prices in the USA are not a lot different than we pay in Australia, though he was not in a discout shop.
LA is not an easy city to get around if you don't have a car, he had phoned before he started left the hotel, to find out that they had moved, meaning a longer trip for him, seeing that he would be too late, the Ladies stayed behind and waited for him, later one of their sons dropped him back to his hotel.
This is great service in a city which can be hard work at the best of times. Genorous people should be promoted and Thanked where ever they are.

The staff are really helpful and could not do enough for me. To the extent that they felt sorry for me as I had walked miles to get to the shop. (in the end caught an airconditioned bus) and gave me a ride back to my Hotel.
They were willing to cut fabric by the metre instead of the yard. They left me to prowl around their shop for two hours just looking around. Prices are competitive.

OREGON

NEWPORT

The Newport Quilt & Gift Co
428 SW Coast Highway
We must have driven past it the first time, and I am very glad we drove back and found it. This is a good shop. It is in a small/medium sized complex of shops set back from the road. Parking is off street and right outside the shop. The shop has a good range of fabrics, and a decent book selection. This is a shop worth stopping at. I bought some pretty fabrics here - with a dainty, blue and yellow floral theme.

ROSEBURG

Seams Like Old Times
250 NE Garden Valley Blvd
Nothing at this address. This was more like an industrial/business area than shops, and we didn't look any further for this one, as this address was somewhat outside the downtown area.

Country Lady Quilt Shop
709 SE Jackson Street
Hours are Monday to Saturday 10 to 5.
What a great shop. I bought fabric and books here. Lots of fabrics, books, and they do classes, and have a heap of quilts on display, both tops and finished ones. The two staff on when I visited were chatty and friendly. I'd also make this shop one worth visiting. It is in the downtown area, so there are other shops to browse at as well.

ASTORIA

Custom Threads
1370 Commercial Street
This is a small shop that had a variety of items, fabric, sewing machines, sewing items, books, knitting wool etc. The gentleman here also repairs sewing machines. I did not buy fabric here. If one were driving right past this shop I'd stop just for a quick look if you could duck into a parking spot for a few minutes, but would not make a detour to see it.

WASHINGTON STATE

SEATTLE

You can book a tour of That Patchwork Place if you are there on the right days (at least, people in the States can, so if you have a contact to do it for you...). You get shown through the offices where many of the quilts from books are displayed on the walls. All interesting, but the best bit of course is the 'Hurt Books' room, where you can buy perfectly pristine copies of books returned by booksellers etc at prices up to 75% off retail. The choice is whatever is there on the day ... An M-bag to get it all home is a good, cheap postage investment if you are prepared to wait (its surface mail).

They sell both new and old quilts. They also carry about 1000 bolts of 100% cotton.
1) They sell books, notions and quilting supplies.
This would be the easiest shop to find if you are a tourist without a car. Or even if you have a car, you can get there on foot. Head towards the Pike Street market.
2)the latter slapbang in the middle of the city, near the produce market which is also worth a look). They have lots of quilts on hangers, many of which are antique, and lovely T-shirts).

I found a quilt shop that I really fell in love with. If you're into country or embroidery or primitive stitching or a combination of any of these, this shop is a MUST!
It was a Top 10 shop in American P & Q's selection in 1998. I know some scquilters have those mags so you can look it up.
As I said, it specialises in country, primitive and folk art. It also has the largest collection of reproduction fabrics in the Pacific Northwest. There are quilts and various stitchery projects on display all over. They offer various BOMs. I signed up for two.....a embroidered flower one that is alternated with 9 patches and a Primitive Angel.
The staff are very friendly and helpful and yes, if you're salivating...they DO ship to Australia! Unfortunately they don't have a website.

CENTRALIA

Quilters Junction.
Interstate 5.nr: the Oregon Border.
Well, the sales tax in this part of Washington is 7.7% compared to Seattle area 8.6 % It's in an old house
I wandered into one of the rooms and there was a display set up featuring Australian P & Q mags and when I looked closer.... Michelle & Ami's fabrics and Patchwork Angel patterns! When the owner realised I was Australian and that I actually KNEW Michelle, Ami & Lynette Anderson, there was even more excitement. Other people in the shop were "Ooohing and Aaahing"over the Aussie goodies as well. As an Australian, it was a very proud moment.
