Ascot is the place to go - there's a
national Quilt exhibition in the Exhibition Halls at Ascot Racecourse in July, and
you have never seen so many quilt shops, or quilters, or heard so many people talking and
laughing, as at Ascot!

4 mins walk from Kew Gardens Underground Station
re the quilt shop. well it was very easy to get to. it does take about 4-5mins walk from the kew gardens train station. the area is really nice and calm/residential but it is amongst a group of shops. it had probably one full wall of bolts of fabric. plus the usual little baskets of little things to make. it had a few of those plastice border things (I forget what they are called) that you trace on and then quilt. it also had a bit of embroidery stuff, like kits and the threads etc. there is a room out the back for the classes. there is also a bookcase/stand with quite a nfew books on it and also a magazine rack thing. it is basically a little shop but it had a nice atmosphere.

I actually went to the Quilt Room last wednesday managed to pick up a few things - including some American magazines which are virtually non existant in all the newsagent in England. The two UK ones are on sale 'Patchwork and Quilting' and 'Popular Patchwork' but not the normal US ones. For these you need to go to a quilt shop. I also bought a pair of gloves for Machine Quilting and these are cream with rubber spots on them to hold the material.. I also picked up quite a few cheap but good books.

WHITLEY BAY
??name
I did find a shop in Whitley Bay (near Newcastle UK). I bought a small whole cloth quilt and bordered it with a very quaint wallpaper type print and called it my Beamish Quilt.
DURHAM
Beamish Open Air Museum (Durham) and had a pre-arranged viewing of some of their quilt collection. There were a couple of whole cloth quilts with stripped borders The Beamish Museum Quilts were truly inspiring and I wish I had known more about the history of quilting before I saw them. Since going I have done quite a bit of reading and would appreciate it much more now.
