      STAYING IN TUNE

QUESTION: How can I keep my axe in tune?

MYTH: Use an electronic tuner and it will be fine.

      SOLUTION:
They are a few basic rules to observe when trying to achieve
      stable tuning.

      1) Make sure your strings are properly stretched. Don't expect to put
      on a
new set of strings, tune up and be ready to go. They need to be
      stretched
to hold proper tuning. Pull or tug at the strings until you can tune
      them
to pitch and have them stay there. An electronic tuner aids this
      process
because it offers an easy reference for tuning. Additionally, change
      your
strings periodically - don't go six months without changing them. Old
      strings never stay in tune.

      2) The nut is also very important. A badly cut nut will be a never
      ending
source of problems for tuning. The nut should fit the string gauge you
      use
properly to stay in tune. If it is too , the string will be
      pinched
and won't stay in tune when bent or played. The string will end up
      playing
flat. If the nut slot is too big, then the string may snap out of the
      slot
completely. So if staying tune seems impossible, one thing to check out
      is
      the nut.

      3) Good tuners can help staying in tune. Cheap or inexpensive tuners
      may
not hold the string properly and make precise tuning impossible.
      However,
more often than not the tuning machines are working properly, so only
      check
      them if all else fails.

      4) Good tuning technique is absolutely necessary. Yes, there is a
      technique
to it. Always approach the correct pitch from below. In other words, go
from flat to the correct pitch not sharp to the correct pitch. If you
      are
tuning the 'B' string, don't down tune down to the 'B' but rather make
      sure
you are flat and slowly tune up until on pitch. If you happen to over
tighten and go sharp, put the string flat and bring it up to pitch
      again.
This helps the string get wrapped properly to hold its pitch better.

One of our subscribers is trying to find info on the Takamine GX-100

Thank you for your reply on my GX-100. I actually looked it up in the
      Orion
      Blue Book,
and , like you said, it does not appear valueable......but it is to me!
      It
      plays like a dream,
DiMarzio pickups, neck-thru, Gibson scale....I love it. (Plus I'm an
      80's
      maniac and a big
      fan of Takamine).
I am the Store Manager of MARS Music here in Charlotte, NC. I aquired
      this
      guitar used
for only $100.00 and then bought it for myself. Thanks again.

      BEST BAND ON THE NET

The Best Band On The Net is a promotion to find the best unsigned band,
using the power of the Internet to
bring artists and listeners together. Best Band 99 brings leading
      musical instrument companies together with
digital music distribution companies to offer thousands of dollars in
prizes. This year's sponsors are Bass
Player, Paiste, Hamer, Toca, MP3-Go, SWR, TKL, Yamaha, Telex, Ovation,
      Lee Oskar, Takamine, Evans,
Berklee Press, Fostex, Vater, DRUM!, NewTech Music, Jazziz, Gibraltar,
      Guitar Player, D'Addario,
Keyboard and SEIKO. The Celebrity Artist Judges for Best Band 99
represent a cross selection of musical
jandra: Sheila E, Alex Acuna, Elton John band guitarists Davey Johnstone
      and John Jorgenson, and Tom
        Dumont of No Doubt.

Kaman Music's Marketing Manager, Alex Fraser, commented: "Last year we
had over 1 million visitors to
BestBand.com and through a combination of on-line balloting and judging
from our Celebrity Artists, we were
able to select the group Zuba as the Best Band On The Net. This year we
are able to offer the ultimate Best
Band with a record deal from the true digital music label, NewTech
Music, one of the RealAudio JukeBox
sites. Best Band 99 will utilize the MP3 digital music format which will
make it very easy for bands to submit
their original material. Our media sponsors will be posting material
which will be educational in nature with the
goal of helping aspiring bands succeed in the industry. MP3 is currently
the hottest topic in both the music and
Internet communities and we feel that with our strategic alliances this
year, we should see traffic exceed 5
        million visitors."

Another new feature of this year's Best Band On The Net contest is a
pool of prizes for early entrants. Each of
the first 60 bands to fully register and submit their song will receive
a string pack from D'Addario, a box of
Vater drumsticks, an Evans drumhead prepack and 2 autographed harmonicas
      from Lee Oskar. And from
Berklee Press, a copy of their new book, The Self Promoting Musician,
      Strategies for Independent Music
Success. This book is a good resource for navigating the music business.

Ovation will provide one of these bands with a bonus prize of a 1998
      Collectors guitar. BestBand.com is now
accepting entries through the month of October.

The contest format is simple. Bands will register and upload material
      from August through October. On-line
voting begins November 1st and runs through mid December. The top 10
bands will be determined by a tally
of all the votes cast on the site. Our Celebrity Artist Judges will
listen to the finalists and construct their votes,
with the Best Band On The Net announced at Los Angeles NAMM 2000.

      VIOLINS AT THE NORTH POLE

One of our customers took some of our violins to the Arctic Circle,
interesting what a small world this really is:

Trimble Gilbert came to the American Festival of Fiddletunes.
He is from north of the Arctic circle, lives in a town without
running water with about 200 inhabitants, called Arctic Village.
They still live off the land!
He is an Athabascan Indian(Gwich'in). At fiddletunes,He represented a
      150
      year
old tradition of fiddlemusic that apparently came over with the french
canadian trappers. But the Gwich'in indians took the music and
changed it. It's got an incredible drum-like beat all through
the music. And they dance their own dances to the music. They
play fiddle and guitar. There was an article about this kind of
music in the last issue of fiddler .
Well, anyway, while he was here, he mentioned he was trying to get
music into the schools, the little kids were interested in learning
his music, but the school could not afford to buy them.
I am in a band, and have always considered my band earnings (pretty
meager) as mad money because I also have a full time job. So I
told Trimble I'd use some of my band money to get instruments for
      his school (Yukon Flats School)
I bought a half sized fiddle from Chris B's music, and a 3/4 sized
fiddle from a local shop. Then people brought me about 5 fullsized
fiddles, and from them I traded and got more 3/4 sized and 1/2 sized
fiddles. I've only shipped 2 instruments to Arctic village so
far, there are 3 that need repairs. A local luthier (Barry Schultz)
has donated his labor FREE to repair these instruments!
So when these are all fixed, I have a great big box to send to
arctic village. People (and two music stores) have donated bows,
cases, strings, shoulder rests, and of course, instruments.
All in all, this is what I have:
      2 1/2 sized,
      4 3/4 sized,
      2 full sized.
all with bows and cases and maybe I am 1 rosin short.
We think this is enough (Trimble thought so)
the only place I am deficient is I don't have any extra sets
of strings for the smaller sized instruments.

So now you know the REST of the story
      Mimi
