"To come in and quiet a crowd like this is really exciting," said
White.
"I could care less if we haven't won here since 1927. Beating
Kentucky
at Rupp Arena is huge. It's something that we can say for the
rest of
our lives. "
Jeff Sheppard scored 15 points and Nazr Mohammed added 12 for
Kentucky
(22-4, 10-2), which failed to avenge a stunning 73-69 loss at
Mississippi last season.
"We started the second half so flat," said Wildcats coach Tubby
Smith.
"When they raised their intensity, we didn't raise ours. They
took
things away from us. A lot of that had to do with Ole Miss getting
after
us defensively."
Mississippi won for just the 10th time in 93 all-time meetings
with
Kentucky.
"I thought our players and coaching staff came in and gave a tremendous
effort today," said Rebels coach Rob Evans, who became the first
Mississippi coach to win consecutive games against Kentucky since
Homer
Hazel did so in 1927 and 1928. "The win today came because of
our
aggressive defense, especially in the second half. "
Mississippi trailed 34-23 at halftime, but started the final 20
minutes
with a 15-4 burst, taking a 39-38 lead with 14:53 to play on a
jumper by
Sesay.
Kentucky battled back to take a 44-41 lead in the second half,
only to
see the Rebels break the game open with a 13-4 spurt.
The Wildcats battled within 62-59 on a 3-pointer by Jeff Sheppard
with
2:02 to play, but Carter slammed the door on Kentucky, hitting
a
3-pointer from the left wing as he was fouled. He made the free
throw to
complete the four-point play and give the Rebels a 66-59 lead
25 seconds
later.
