Dear Michael,
I see you are disfcussing a lot about eating and
shooting. After reading some books, I made some
experiments, having little, moderate,
carbohydrate-rich, before, during and after a match.
My conclusions,at least the ones that gave good
results in 3P and air rifle, in case they are usefull
to anyone are:
1. a light breakfast, with moderate amount of
carbohydrates (mainly bread and bread related food)is
best about two hours before shooting. A big breakfast,
with eggs, jam and cheese did not worked well.
2. during the match, small amounts of chocolate seem
to calm down my nerves and improves my pulse. I do not
know if anyone agrees with me at this point.
3. Not to change my feeding habits before a
competition
I hope this personal experience could be somehow
usefull to your readers.
Changing of topic, I want to tell you about the MEC
tube. I was in Atlanta World Cup, and I saw almost
nobody using it. My results fell down considerable
using it, I guess the balance of the whole weapon
change, just as happen with the foresight and it
relationship with the targe image. Taking it out
improved my air rifle shooting
Finally, I wonder ir anyone can help me, again, with
the building of the kneelling position, as well as the
main considerations to be taken with respect to its
internal position and where the concentration should
be directed to.
Thanks Michael, great job.

Does anyone know of any TV-channels that are planning to broadcast the
Sydney
shooting events?
[Editor - in Atlanta they had a European crew there which was supposedly
broadcasting the finals live. I did not see them filming the
qualifications. I'm sorry I don't recall the company, but they ran their
feed onto the monitors in the finals area as well so the crowd could
watch it too. You could watch their commercials as well. We're pretty
well screwed here in the US unless you can catch it off the satellite. I
love to get a copy of whatever video does come out.]
The 52. is a 22LR cal rifle made by Winchester for precision competition.
Most collegiate and junior shooters who cannot afford the Anschutz have
learned on 52's.
It is a very good shooting rifle and is a good precision rifle. The care
and cleaning is the same as for any other rifle. If you get a good stock
then keep the oil away from the wood as this will turn it to a sponge and
will not support the recoil of the rifle.
You have received a fine precision rifle. Don't abuse it and it will give
you many enjoyable shooting hours. As with any competition rifle the
chamber should be checked for erosion as this will effect the precision
shooting abilities. Winchester made a find rifle and a lot of begining
athletes started with one and then transferred to Anschutz. But a lot
rebarrelled and did just as well as an anschutz rifle. Good
Shooting.

Winchester 52D Info
Lucky you. Its real hard to find a Win. 52. The 52D is a single shot
target gun. It came in 3 weights, standard, heavy and bull barrels. The
only tricky part of the rifle is taking the bolt out. With the bolt
closed and uncocked, push the tigger forward and at the same time open
the bolt. To put it back, put the bolt in until it stops on a small lever
in the receiver. (This is how I hold I do it.) With the right thumb
holding the bolt against the lever and pulling on the trigger, with the
left hand stick your finger in the receiver and push the lever down. The
bolt will slip pass the lever and is ready to use. (Sometimes we could
use three hands.)
As for cleaning, it depends on the gun. Some will shoot dirty, some
won't. There's a whole bunch of opinions on cleaning. Testing is the only
way to find out. Shoot some test groups. Then shot the gun. After a
couple of hundred shots, fire more test groups. See if there is a
differenece. If its bigger, clean the gun and shoot some more test
groups. Did it shrink? If yes, you need to clean.
That's about all you need to do. By the way, if you clean the gun, keep
the solvent from going into the trigger. Some turn the gun upside down
when they clean. If you want to take the gun apart, there's two action
screws. One behind the trigger and the other in the rail. (There's a
third screw behind the bolt. You might have to hold that one while you
loosen the one behind the trigger. Three hands again.)
Have fun,
Alan
You can download the manual for Winchester 52B at: <A

Owner's Manuals</A> , I think that 52D is not much different.
Mr. Willats:
I believe that the Winchester 52-D was only a single shot model,
that is, it was not magazine fed like the B or C models. And as I recall,
up until 1969 there were only approximately 125,250? made. There were
some made after '69 but were called E models and had something faintly
reminescant of a Freeland free rifle stock.
Hope that helps.
The 52D is a single shot the 52C has a magazine.
This is a fine rifle to hold onto as a collector if nothing else.
They have a very wide trigger and fast lock time.
I have seen some around the BR-50 matches but cannot remember
one being very competitive.
