Renney, a native of Cranbrook, B.C., joined the National Team program at the beginning of the 1992-93 season and was appointed Head Coach in August of 1993. Renney coached Canada's National Hockey team to a bronze medal at the 1995 World Championships and won the silver medal at the 1996 World Championships in Vienna, Austria.

Tom Renney coached Canada's Olympic Hockey Team to a silver-medal victory at the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway and coached the gold medal winning team at the 1994 World Ice Hockey Championships in Milan, Italy.

Renney, 41, coached the Kamloops Blazers to two WHL regular season pennants during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons posting a record of 101 wins, 37 losses and 6 ties. Under the guidance of Renney, the Kamloops Blazers became the 1991-92 Canadian Hockey League's Memorial Cup Champions.

Renney has been honoured with the following awards: Sport British Columbia Coach of the Year in 1991-92, 3M Coaches Canada Award, and WHL Coach of the Year in 1990-91. Was an assistant coach for the Canadian team at the International Ice Hockey Federation's 1992 World Junior Championship in Fussen, Germany and in the summer of 1992, was the head coach of Canada's national under 18 team winning the Phoenix Cup in Japan.

Tom Renney graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in physical education. Tom and his wife Glenda have two daughters; Jessica and Jamie.
