VANCOUVER (CP) -- Lonny Bohonos is making the most of a late-season chance with the Vancouver Canucks.
The hard-shooting forward from Winnipeg has four goals in eight games while filling in for injured forwards Pavel Bure, Trevor Linden and Dave Roberts.
Bohonos was recalled from the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League earlier this month when the Canucks ran short of healthy forwards.
For the season, the rookie has eight goals and 14 points in 28 NHL games, another 22 goals and 30 assists in 41 games with Syracuse. Last year, he led the Crunch in scoring with 79 points.
Bohonos and fellow youngsters Larry Courville and Scott Walker played on a line Monday against Los Angeles. All three were teammates last season in Syracuse.
"Probably the reason I'm up here is all the injuries," said Bohonos. "I want to take advantage of that and show them I can play here.
"It's exciting. It's definitely where I want to play. I want to be here next year. I'll work hard."
Vancouver coach Tom Renney has used Bohonos on the power play at times and his line had a shift in overtime in the 2-2 tie against the Kings.
"The experience of playing in situations like that helps my confidence a lot," added Bohonos.
The Canucks play at home tonight against the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Vancouver desperately needs a victory to remain in the Western Conference playoff race. The Canucks are 30-39-5 with eight games left in the season.
The undrafted Bohonos turned 24 last month. The Canucks signed him as a free agent in 1994 after he scored 62 goals for the Portland Winter Hawks of the junior Western Hockey League.
If the Canucks don't make the NHL playoffs, Bohonos is eligible to return to Syracuse for the AHL playoffs.
