Nemchinov was acquired by the Canucks on March 8, 1997 along with Brian Noonan from the New York Rangers in exchange for Esa Tikkanen and Russ Courtnall.
Canucks GM Pat Quinn described him after the trade as "Nemchinov gives us a centre, one that played with Alex (Mogilny) in the World Cup this year," said Quinn. "And certainly, we remember him playing very well against us in the Stanley Cup final a few years ago."
He becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
Quinn said he would try hard to re-sign him.
"He's probably the type of centre we can use," said Canucks rookie head coach Tom Renney. "It will take the pressure off people like (Mike) Ridley and (Mike) Sillinger.
"We needed a centre who could work with Alex (Mogilny) or Pavel (Bure), or both," added Renney.
Nemchinov was the first Russian-born player to play with the Rangers, after being the Rangers' 13th choice, 244 overall, in the 1990 Entry Draft.
