Calgary at Vancouver

October 5, 1996

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Alexander Mogilny and Esa Tikkanen scored first-period goals and Kirk McLean stopped 28 shots Saturday as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Calgary Flames 3-1 in the season opener for both teams.

Calgary Flames Jarome Iginla is congratulated by teammate Corey Millen (34) after scoring the Flames' first goal of the 1996-97 NHL season.
Mogilny -- a 55-goal scorer last season -- took a pass from Trevor Linden, came in on a breakaway and scored past Calgary goaltender Trevor Kidd, banging the shot off the left post.

After highly-touted rookie Jarome Iginla tallied his first NHL goal for the Flames, Tikkanen redirected Russ Courtnall's shot past Kidd with 33 seconds left in the opening period for his first goal this season.

McLean, who is coming off a sub-par season after leading the Canucks to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1994, stopped 10 shots in the first period and 18 over the final two minutes to post the win.

Calgary was 0-for-6 on the power play.

Pavel Bure, playing in his first game since suffering a season-ending knee injury last December, took a slap shot that tipped off Kidd's glove. Markus Naslund shoveled Bure's rebound past Kidd at 3:12 of the third period to cap the scoring.

Kidd stopped 20 shots for the Flames.

Iginla, who was acquired from Dallas late last season for disgruntled center Joe Nieuwendyk, tipped Corey Millen's shot past McLean just 57 seconds after Mogilny's goal.
