The game remained scoreless until Chicago's Sergei Krivokrasov got his ninth goal of the season with 5:56 remaining in regulation. Blackhawks defenseman Michal Sykora kept the puck in the offensive zone and slid a pass into the left faceoff circle. Krivokrasov skated forward and let Vancouver's Jyrki Lumme slide by before putting a wrist shot over Corey Hirsch's right shouler.
It didn't take long for Vancouver to tie it as Chicago's Denis Savard was called for high-sticking with 3:46 to play. From the left corner, Alexander Mogilny fed a pass into the slot to Tikkanen, who beat Jeff Hackett to the glove side with a quick slap shot for his 11th goal.
Chicago had all five shots in the overtime and had several scoring chances after Canucks winger Russ Courtnall took a slashing penalty at 2:20. But Hirsch denied the Blackhawks each time.
Hirsch finished with 32 saves for Vancouver, which is 1-5-1 in its last seven games. The Canucks are 2-0-1 against the Blackhawks this season.
Hackett stopped 28 shots for Chicago, which is 1-2-2 in its last five contests.
Both teams were without star players. Vancouver played without right wing Pavel Bure, who has a case of whiplash. Chicago defenseman Chris Chelios has a left knee injury.
