Martin Gelinas scored the eventual game-winner 99 seconds into the third period and Corey Hirsch made 30 saves as the Vancouver Canucks snapped a seven-game home winless streak against the Detroit Red Wings with a 3-2 victory.
Adrian Aucoin and Lonny Bohonos also scored for the Canucks, who were 0-6-1 in their previous seven home games against the Red Wings. It was Vancouver's first home win against Detroit since December 17th, 1991.
The Canucks also snapped a three-game home losing streak.
Viacheslav Fetisov and Steve Yzerman tallied for the Red Wings, who are winless in three straight (0-2-1) for the first time this season.
Gelinas picked off Mathieu Dandenault's clearing attempt at the left point, moved in a stride and blasted a slap shot over Kevin Hodson's left shoulder for his eighth goal of the season to give Vancouver a 3-1 lead.
Canucks defenseman Dave Babych was off for tripping when Yzerman scored his 11th goal with 65 seconds left to draw the Red Wings within one. Hirsch made a pad save on Brendan Shanahan's wrist shot from the right faceoff circle but Yzerman, left alone at the top of the crease, banged in the rebound.
Detroit pulled goaltender Chris Osgood for an extra attacker in the final minute, but Hirsch made a chest save on Yzerman on the only shot he faced.
Aucoin's second goal of the season, 2:30 into the contest, gave the Canucks a 1-0 lead. Fetisov answered with his fifth goal with 48 seconds left in the opening period to tie it.
Vancouver caught a break on its second goal 35 seconds into the middle period. Bohonos took a slap shot from the left circle that hit the far goalpost. The rebound caromed to the left and hit the skate of defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who was covering Gelinas, and slid into the net.
Hodson stopped 23 shots in his third start of the season. He was forced to leave for a 2:40 span of the first period with a mask problem.
