Gelinas to contend for Masterton
P> VANCOUVER (CP) -- Martin Gelinas's hard work and determination for the Vancouver Canucks has not gone unnoticed by the Vancouver chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.
Gelinas was named Vancouver nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy, awarded annually to an NHL player for perserverence, dedication and sportsmanship.
Left-winger Gelinas, 26, from Shawinigan, Que., has been a Vancouver leader all season. He had 28 goals and 56 points in 65 games at the start of the week, including three- and four-goal games.
The Masterton Trophy commemorates the late Bill Masterton of the Minnesota North Stars, who died in 1968 from a head injury.
The 1996 Masterton winner was Gary Roberts of the Calgary Flames.
Gelinas joined the Canucks in January 1994 when claimed on waivers from the Quebec Nordiques. He has been a consistent contributor ever since.
