YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE

When you walk through a storm,
Hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm,
There's a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown..
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone...
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone...
You'll never walk alone.

BACKGROUND

The song is from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical "Carousel" and was a hit most notably for Gerry Marsden, (Gerry and the Pacemakers) of "Ferry cross the Mersey" fame. The man himself sang it before the Norwich home game (last day of the Kop) this year.

As for why particularly it was adopted by the Kop, I'm not quite sure, but the story I've heard is that at the the time the Gerry and Co. were having the hit (mid Sixties, I think), it was played at Anfield a few times before matches, local band, big hit etc. Then one Saturday it wasn't played over the P.A. but the Kop started singing it anyway and it just grew from that to the now traditional rendition before kick-off.
