Jacques De Molay: The Last Grand Master


Jacques de Molay is believed to have been born in 1244 in an area called Vitrey, Department of Haute Saone, France. Little is known of his childhood, but at the age of twenty one, in the year 1265, he joined the Knights Templar.

Thirty three years later, in 1298, Jacques de Molay was named Grand Master (the highest honor bestowed) of the Knights Templar. He was 54 years of age. De Molay ran the Templars until they were arrested by King Philip (the fair) in 1307. On October 13th of that year, all the Templars were arrested and put to torture. During these tortures, confessions ranging from spitting on the Holy Cross to worshipping an idol called Baphomet were given.

De Molay Burning De Molay was no exception to the tortures of the king. He later renounced his guilt stating he was only guilty of lying about the order while being tortured. On March 19th, 1314, De Molay was slowly burned at the stake defending the order the whole time. Before he died he is said to have asked King Philip and Pope Clement to join him in death within a year. True to his alleged curse, t both men died within the year perhaps adding to the mysteries of the Templar Knights.
