AFRICA UNDER COLONIALISM:
THE NEW FREEDOM FIGHTERS

In 1885 the European powers met in Berlin to divide Africa to their liking. By the early 1900s, every peice of African land was divided up among European nations : the only exceptions being Ethiopia and Liberia. This new relationship between Africa and Europe would create struggles for independence and freedom from some unlikely sources.

Listed among those who struggled against the European colonizers are individuals such as Jomo Kenyatta and Kwame Nkrumah who led their nations to freedom. But even before these were fighters such as Yaa Asantewa and the Zulus. It should be said that this period created odd freedom fighters indeed. In the case of Yaa Asantewa of the Ashanti for example there is great controversy. The Ashanti are numbered among those African ethnic groups who participated in the African slave trade. But when the British attempted to colonize their land, they became a symbol of "freedom" in their struggle to many. The irony in such a turn of events is obvious. Below will be given a brief history of individuals and events who have shaped and defined the struggle for black independence on the African continent.
