Vocabulary Duel

Dorian Love
St Enda's Secondary School, Johannesburg
Level
Grade 8-12 (13-18 years)
Most effective 13-15 years
Aims & Objectives
  1. To test vocabulary in a fun way
  2. To focus on particular contexts, and the vocabulary that goes with that context
Lesson Plan
  1. The class forms groups of about 5-6 people.
  2. Each group writes a situation or context on a piece of paper, eg. Shopping, or Going to the cinema.
  3. The pieces of paper are collected and placed in a hat/box.
  4. One member each from groups one and two sit at the front of the class, ready to "duel".
  5. One piece of paper is drawn from the hat, and read out loud.
  6. The first player must say out loud a word associated with that context.
  7. The second player must produce a sentence using that word.
  8. The second player says a word out loud, and the first player produces a sentence.
  9. The class intervenes if it feels a word has been used wrongly (the teacher is a class member too)
  10. If a sentence is wrong (the teacher is an umpire), the player who faulted must sit down and another member from his/her group replaces him/her.
  11. This continues until all the members of a group are eliminated.
Notes
Duel can be a lengthy process, and so is useful as a regular feature of your class for use at odd moments, such as when half a period has been lost to administration, or students are too frisky for other work (Spring Day, Civvies Days, etc). The rules can be changed for individual challenges, a league table, or so on. Results can be posted on a chart for continuity, and a cup awarded at the end of the year for the Vocabulary Champions.
