Lesson Plan
|
The teacher tells the class that they are hospital staff, doctors, nurses, administrators, who have the difficult task of deciding who should receive the kidney machine. Five people need the machine to live, but only one can receive it.
Each group/individual receives the sheet below, and each group discusses their choice and then reports back to the whole class on their choice and their reasons. Alternatively, after report backs, a free vote can be held.
The lesson should occupy about forty minutes. During the discussion, if groups start to come out strongly for one candidate, you should make a negative announcement, "news just in" about that person so that all candidates get a hearing.
|
The hospital has only one kidney machine. The following patients require a kidney machine. If they do not receive treatment, they will, in all probability, die. The choice is difficult, but it must be made.
