Plane crash in enemy territory

by Dorian Love
St Enda's Secondary School, Johannesburg

Level

Junior Secondary

Duration

30 Minutes

Aims

  1. To facilitate talk
  2. To encourage logical thought
  3. To engage with difficult ethical issues

Resources

A canteen card for every member of the class.
The Cue card with Background story, rules and map, to be given to each group.
A Die (D6).

The Lesson

Divide the class into groups of about five people. Introduce the role play by reading over the background story. Give each group one canteen card per person. Each group must then discuss their first move.

Circulate from group to group and play out their move for each day according to the rules. Note that diagonal movement is not allowed. If the group splits you need to roll a die. If a one is thrown then the persons in that group are captured by the enemy. Any players without canteens or at a stream or oasis at the end of a move (day) are declared dead. All canteens which cannot be re-filled, are taken away!

The point to the exercise is largely that no group can get all its members to safety without leaving some behind. Some must give the others their canteens if any are to survive! You should then allow the group to go back and rescue the others by providing extra canteens at the safe house, if the group does not think of setting up a relay system from river to oasis, and so on by sending one back with empty canteens at each stage to fetch those left behind.

Follow-up

The class might write a narrative of their "adventure".

Save to disk, print, cut out and paste on card. There should be one canteen for every member of the class.

A Plane Crash in Enemy territory!

The Background Story

You are a bomber crew that was flying over enemy territory. Your plane was shot down at map co-ordinate G1 and crashed in the desert. You need to reach the safe house at map co-ordinate A7 in order to escape.

The Rules

  1. You may move two sqaures a day (Diagonal movement is not allowed!)
  2. At the end of each day your canteen is empty. To survive the next day you need to fill up your canteen at a water source, either an oasis, or a river
  3. If you are left without a canteen or if you are not at a water source, you will die from dehydration after 1 day!
  4. While you stick together you are safe, but if you split up - the smaller group may be detected by the enemy and you will be captured (a roll of 1 on a die)
