Statement that Roger Sent to MUFON of Orange County, California

Roger delivered his color photographs to MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) of Orange County, California, on July 27, 1996. Actually, he hand delivered them to MUFON at one of their monthly meetings in Costa Mesa. He delivered them to Jan Harzan, who I believe is the President of that chapter. Material given to MUFON are reprints of the origional 4x6 pictures with and without the UFO in it. Also given were 8x10's of the same 2 pictures. On that day, July 27, a MUFON representative stated to Roger that they would study the photo's, and communicate to Roger as to the contents of the pictures (UFO, Bird, Airplane, etc). As of May 12, 1997, Roger has received nothing back from this MUFON group. This group stated to Roger that they would study the photographs, and send them to the main MUFON orginization for further study. Again, Roger has received nothing from this group as to what is actually in the photographs.

About 1 year after delivering the pictures to MUFON, Roger received a phone call from Jan Harzan, and Jan said that he thought that the picture of the UFO was a 'Bald Eagle'. With that stated, I, Roger Louie, would have to say that I don't believe the Bald Eagle conclusion. I enjoy seeing and being in natural places, and I usually 'absorb' and notice all types of things going on around me. If a Bald Eagle flew in front of me and my camera, 'I Would Notice It'. Heck, if I saw a Bald Eagle, I would have shot all kinds of pictures of it. When you are in a place like Bryce Canyon, you tend to just stare out at the surroundings, just to absorb the scenery. One tends to notice any/all moving objects in the field of view. Birds are especially noticable in these 'static scenery' places. With these reasons, I justify to myself, that I don't believe that the 'unidentified object' was a Bald Eagle.

Also, since I was hand holding my camera, with a estimated aperature of 105mm, the shutter speed must have been at least 1/125 second or highter. My camera has a 'camera shake' light in the viewfinder, and it flashes if the camera computes that the picture will be blurry due to camera shake. With such a shutter speed, the Bald Eagle, or any birds for that matter, would be 'frozen' in the picture frame, and not be blurry as seen in the Picture Frame #2 of the UFO. In final, I still don't know what the UFO is. I don't say it's a flying saucer, but I will say that is an 'Unidentified Flying Object'.

The following paragraph(s) below were sent to MUFON to describe the circumstances in which the UFO picture was taken. A few typos and errors were corrected in this version.

The following is a description of how the photograph was made.
The pictures were taken by Roger Louie, on June 7, 1994, Tuesday, approximately 9:00 AM in the morning, in Bryce Canyon, Utah. At the time of the photograph was taken, Roger did not notice the UFO in the scenery. Only when Roger developed the pictures did he notice the bright white spot in his photo. Roger always develops his prints in 4x6 size, at some inexpensive developing place like Target or Kmart.

The camera was a Minolta 700si fully automatic camera, with a Minolta 28-105mm f3.5-4.6 telephoto lens. The camera was most likely in the P mode, where the user just points the camera, zooms as necessary, then presses the shutter button. The film was most probably (95% sure) Kodak 400 asa GOLD film. The photograph was taken with the camera hand held, with no tripod. If I recall, a Tiffen circular Polarizer filter was used, but I would not bet my life on that fact.

Im pretty sure that the area that I took the photograph was an area of Bryce Canyon called Fairy Tail Land, which is the first stop after the parks entrance, but which we visited at the end of the Bryce Canyon visit. Each stop area along the rim of Bryce Canyon has a name to that area. The lense setting with respect to f-stop is completely unknown. Perhaps a knowledgeable camera person could estimate the setting, based upon film speed, zoom setting, camera type in P mode, and the fact the camera was hand held, and at 9:00 AM in the morning.

I know for a fact that the camera warns me about camera shake, which is based upon how much I am zoomed with repect to the shutter speed. I doubt if I took any pictures that were during my vacation trip where a camera shake condition existed. Some notes about the zoom setting when I took the 2 pictures. The overall picture of the canyon WITHOUT the UFO object was probably done with a setting of 50mm. The zoomed image that CONTAINED the UFO object was probably done with a 105mm setting. My goal when taking the picture of the 'snowy' area was to zoom in as close as possible, and emphasize that 'snowy' area in my picture. I most likely zoomed as far as I could, to 105mm, then took the photographs. Luck as it would be, the UFO would be captured by accident, unknown to me at the time, in my now treasured photograph. Please beware that the just mentioned lense settings are guestimates based upon the relative magnification of the 2 photographs. As you can see from the photographs, the picture with the UFO is about twice the magnification as the picture without the UFO. This can be determined by measuring the 'snowy' looking area between the 2 photographs.
