SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT
THE OLYMPIC GAMES
by David Snipper
The Centennial Olympic Games, the Games of the XXVI Olympiad opened
in Atlanta, Georgia on the evening of July 19, 1996, with a grand ceremonial
opening. There was a march-past of all the competing nations and a "swearing-in"
of all the athletes to play fair and in the true spirit of Olympians. The
Games lasted for 17 day.
It is called The Centennial Olympic Games because it is the hundredth
(100th) anniversary of the Olympic Games which began in 1896. The Roman
numbers XXVI means 26. This was the 26th Olympic Games. It is a tradition
to use Roman numbers for the Summer Olympic Games. The Winter Olympic Games
uses ordinary numbers. Three Olympic Games were not held due to wars.
Do you know what numbers those games were? (The Games still get a number
even if they were not held.)
This was one of the biggest Olympic Games ever held. There were about
11,000 athletes including 3400 women, from 197 countries. Athletes competed
in 37 different sports disciplines through 271 events! Two thirds of the
world's population, 3.5 billion people are expected to watch some part
of the Olympic Games on television.
The Olympic rings are the official symbol of the Olympic movement. There
are five connected rings of the colors blue, yellow, black, green and red.
The rings are set on a white background. Baron Coubertin designed the emblem
in 1913. The Olympic rings represents the union of the 5 continents. The
colors were chosen because at least one of these colors is found in the
flag of every nation.

Cut up and give one to each student. The goal
is to group the sentences together. They may not get the order of it
all right, but paragraphs should be identified.
-
Have them write comprehension questions
for a trivia quiz on the passage.

For a weaker group, give
out only a few sentences from one paragraph to arrange.
