Stanton

The Stanton family is found throughout the southern counties of Alabama since the first pioneers settled in the area in the early 1800's. Phillip E. Stanton, born in 1867, is the father of Annie Kate Stanton who married Russell Wallace Kirkpatrick in 1919. They moved to Atlanta, Georgia, however many of their cousins, nephews, and neices remain in the same small town, Canoe, Alabama, that has been their home since the 19th century.

Phillip Edward Stanton1 was born on November 11, 1867. Around 1892, he married Francis Godwin2, born September 18, 1870. Phillip owned a store in the small town of Canoe, Alabama. He is said to have been generous on lending credit to local townspeople. One of his grand-daughters, Mary Jane Kirkpatrick, remembers him as a "good Christian man" who often made the journey to Atlanta in order to help his daughter, Annie Kate's, family with harvesting. In his later years he had difficulty recognizing family members. He died at home in his chair on November 23, 1947. His wife, Francis, was tremendously overcome with grief and could no longer be cared for at home. She was committed to a mental asylum in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where it has been said that she destroyed mattresses and was completely without her faculties.
