A series of unexplained cattle mutilations is startling residents and media in central Oregon and generating a rash of rumors. Eleven calf mutilations were discovered by a farmer and an RV enthusiast over the weekend in a remote area between Brothers and Bend, with 18 more discovered late Tuesday.

Last March 14 mutilated animals were discovered in the same area. The disfigured cattle were skinned and otherwise mutilated, and in the Tuesday find, a skinned pig with its ears removed also was found. Those are the facts, but other rumors have not been confirmed.

Kimball Lewis, the state humane agency representative in the area, has said the investigation of the cause of the mutilations may lead to a cattle production company that's using the public land off U.S. 20 between Bend and Brothers as a dumping ground. Lewis also said it could turn out to be youngsters choosing to be cruel to animals. Either way, Lewis said it was bizarre to see the newest set of carcasses within a couple of miles of last years unsolved find.

Late Wednesday, a staff reporter for the local NBC television affiliate told Art Bell that Lewis termed the finds "one for the X-Files," raising speculation that the attack of the calves may have been extraterrestrial in origin. Bell also reported unconfirmed rumors that a local judge had placed a "gag order" on the case. Also reported as unusual was the find of the recent calves, which were Holstein dairy cattle.

No known Holstein farms are known to be in the beef cattle area, reported the television station.
