In the first minutes of the church we read "A Sabbath School was organized this spring which was well attended during the summer and .all but was closed at the commencement of winter," This was in 1852,
April 6, 1856 we read again, "The Sabbath School of the Harmony congregation was reorganized at half past nine o'clock after singing and prayer. The following officers were elected for the present year: 1st Superintendent, Jonathan Allshouse; Ass't. Superintendent, Daniel Cort, Jr.; Secretary and Librarian, John Kemerer; Treasurer, Albert Cort,"
Leaders in the early development of our Sunday School were Lank Cort, Dan Cort, Jr., and John Bauman. Mrs. Frances Newgard served faithfully as Superintendent of the Sunday School for a number of years. When Ed Alspach became superintendent a young people's class vas organized called the "Hawkeye Bible Class," This group helped in many church activities.
Mrs. B, C, Chesterman was superintendent from 1923-1932, During this period the attendance grew to 206 - the highest to date. For years we took part in the annual Sunday School parade and picnic in Dubuque.
Superintendents who have served in this capacity were: Rev. Witmer, Robert Kennedy, Dorothy Brouillard, Donald Casteel, Lyle Cueno, Mrs. Mildred Faust and the present superintendent, Hazel Shady.
The annual Vacation Bible School has served the younger members of our community as well as the Sunday School of our church. For a period of years we engaged a team of teachers from the Iowa Rural Bible Crusade, Since their abandonment we have been fortunate in securing the teachers of our local Sunday School. During this week we have used the collection to support the less fortunate - ARC, CROP and the mission field. Our goal this year is to have Bible School for 10 days instead of five.
In recent years we have secured lesson materials from David C. Cook Publications, We now have six classes taught by dedicated teachers. The principal goal of each teacher is that
each pupil memorize the Bible verse each week. They are rewarded for their ability. Our present minister, Tom Beck and his wife, Karen have given much of their time and talents to our Sunday School,
We now have six classes namely: Kindergarten, Pat Hansen; Primary No. 1, Hazel Shady; Primary No. 2, Karen Beck; Junior, Tom Beck; Junior High, Judy Marcus; Adult, Karen Unsen (Riley)
It is the hope and prayer of all our teachers that our students will remember this Bible verse: "Remember now thy Creator in the days `of thy youth." Ecclesiastes 12:1
