You had to be in Hillo to understand the ad. Talk about Black Bunga, Maramkat, Makro, Tosh, Bisc and Ma Bisc and you'll easily strike a chord of nostalgia. This no doubt was what drove a group of about 150 former Hillschoolians and some Hillo wannabes and ex-hillo family representatives (Tony and Sheila Tunoi were properly represented by Alex) to Carnie on the 11th October 2003. Jamaas started arriving from about 11 a.m. but games could not start before 1p.m. There was such great excitement as guys from the seventies all the way to the nineties converged.
Games were facilitated by Tony from Splash - Challenge and comprised of teamski (won by Simba), and bombsquad and mkokoteni assembly (won again by Simba), spider's web, six-a-side soccer (mixed)(Won by Chui), some game whereby guys were blindfolded/asked to look away after removing their shoes, then the shoes were placed in the center of the circle and jumbled up. Each player then had to look for his/her shoes, wear them and get out of the circle. The first team to all get out wins (Won by Duma). We also had what I considered to be the highlight of the games, slippery tug of war. Duma had the most 'eschuma' team, with guys like Omino, 3 Lekolools who are in the army, KWS and Kenya Power and of course, the supuu of the tug team, Eva Wasonga. With a team like that, Simba and Chui were pulled like minions. At the end of these games, Simba and Duma had equal points and a tiebreaker was needed. The final game was decided democratically (so no excuses could be found for losing) and this was the relay sprint. No prizes for guessing who won - Simba of course!! The likes of Timo and Martin Keino were no match for everyone else. Thanks to Ray Oruo for supplying the humongous trophy.
We had a late lunch at about 5.30 p.m. Boy what a lunch!! The Carni chef did justice to the Hillo menu in a way that would have made Ma Dalti lick her fingers. They even made Mkenye/msenye and cocoa, not to mention the fish and chicken and beef and mutton and? I can't help salivating. That was not all. After the lunch/dinner, we had a surprise birthday cake for Bisc, whose birthday was in the following week. It was a lovely sponge cake with the Hillo logo emblazoned thereon. We sang 3 different variants of Happy Birthday to you and to cap it the DJ had this Happy Birthday song done by New Kids on the Block play on the background as Bisc cut the cake with a huge pirates' sword, with the Hillo family surrounding him and swaying to the beat. Then they officially started of the boogie, and guess what, guys were lined up like they used to, guys on one line and chiles on the the opposite. Remember kina Sam Fan Thomas songs, Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Eddy Grant and all those old school jams (when did you last dance to 4 Seasons' 'O What a Night')? When did you last see a jungu who could dance in a coordinated manner to such music? You should have seen Ma Bisc. She was a sight to behold. She probably danced better than the Rare Watts.
The bash went on and on and on?. In fact, Bhangra night started 3 hours late coz Hillo jamaas had refused to chuck from the dance floor. It was such fun. Here's a sample of what guys had to say. It sums up what I am unable to adequately explain:
