Nairobi Reunion- December 28, 2002

On December 28, two days after the general elections, the few remaining Hillo Alumni in Nairobi were set to meet. The chosen venue was the newly opened Kengele's Club in Kilimani on Hurlingham Road. As expected, due to the general elections and holiday season, fewer people were still in the city. The upper deck of Kengeles had a wonderful view of Suburban Nairobi and a bunch of us enjoyed the sun while having a few drinks. A live soccer match was on the TV screens and there seemed to be some rowdy fans from the occassional shouting from the ground floor. We soon realized however that the chants weren't coming from within but rather from the nearby area. After further probing, we realized these were some avid voters who were spoiling for action cheering their candidate. Apparently, we were less than 100 meters from Kilimani Primary School, one of the polling stations for voters. Since no announcements on results had been made, there was anxiety in the air and the mood seemed tense on the streets of Nairobi. The turnout was lean and it seemed there were more alumni from St. Marys, Nairobi than Hillo alumni. These saints guys were really enjoying that fact too. After continued voter chants, we decided to adjourn and meet at a residence and leave the crowd scene behind. Unfortunately, for those who came later in the evening, we had already left. Despite the overwhelming Saints turnout, it was a great evening. Below are pics of Nairobi in December:
