Washington DC Reunion 2002

The Hillo Reunion at the world's capital was a high-charged event with a sports theme to symbolize vitality for the nation. The venue at MLK park, had a politically correct ring for a get-together of this sort, although thankfully there were only few politicans who showed up. There was a large overall turnout in part because of the games and this added a competitive spirit to the air. Coach Jack Arum had organized a basketball tournament for charity; there was barbecue going on; the embassy folks were trying to pass word and sign up enough heads for the next week's Kenyan social; Kenya Airways reps had been flown in for PR and partying and socializing was happening on a high scale. There was a particularly strong attendance of alumni from neighboring Eldoret schools. Present were Uasin Gishu (U.G.) and Wareng High School alumni who even provided a DJ.

Since there were multiple activities going on at the Park, there was a lot going on at once. For brevity's sake we shall focus mainly on the sports/hillo activities. The action began promptly at 10:00 as we know Jack runs a tight ship, and after the Anthem/flag formalities, it was time to face off. It was good seeing Hillo Alumni show up- when the Abdul Kibogy team arrived, it added more excitement having a hillo team. There were about 6 teams with near 7ft centers and as illustrated, Abdul showed em Hillo pride. Unfortunately, halfway into playoffs, an unforecasted rain and lightning storm hit, forcing the adjoinment to the next day.

The pics below give a very small narration of the events, due to the rain-storm that threw plans amock. They really do not do the event justice as we didn't have a chance to take everyone's picture, let alone a hillo group picture. For all those who aren't on the photos, my sincere apologies and if you have any other pics, please send and they will be added here.

One thing very positive about the beltway alumni is that there is strong interest in establishing give-back activities for Hillo. With the right coordination and sponsorship, the next phase of directly impacting current and future Hill School students will occur. For now, lets sit back and re-live the fun moments of the DC 2002 Hillo feast. Thanks to all Hill Schoolians who showed, and special thanks to Jack for park arrangement and also for shielding my music system from the rain- we shall definitely support school spirit. Not photograhed include Grace Owuor, Anne Ndusu, Daisy Serem, John (Wareng) and the Muslim Girls alumni.
