Rambutan ![]() Another celebrated tropical fruit in Singapore is the rambutan. It has a zany prickly red appearance which suggests exotic and perhaps even challenging flavors, but the fruit is actually quite accessible in texture and flavor. Inside, it bears a little bit of resemblance to a lychee or longan, in the same way that perhaps an orange resembles a lemon - similar texture, related yet distinct flavors. A rambutan is certainly sweet and juicy. Just use your thumbnail to puncture the peel and then rip off the red prickly layer. Watch for the small pit inside. Both Andrina and Mason love eating fresh rambutan in Singapore. Unfortunately, the occasional availability of fresh rambutan in California is of a lower quality variety from Central or South America.
