Public Policy Committee

Charge:

Create a legislature agenda from YWCA USA policy directives and regional current events to guide public policy work. Educate YWCA members and the community on issues related to the mission and programs of the YWCA. Take appropriate action at the local, state, and federal levels in order to effect social change on these issues. Plan and conduct conferences and forums on specific topics.

Objectives:

1. Select issues to address related to national YWCA Public Policies as adopted by Convention, YWCA of the Mid-Peninsula programs, and community needs (example Week Without Violence).

2. Assign issues to committee members to research and report to the committee.

3. Prepare position papers for approval by Board of Directors.

4. Prepare and distribute information to members and the public through forums, displays, letters to elected representatives, letter to the newspapers, and field trips.

5. Inform and educate the Board on national and local policy stands. Through regular reports, solicit Board action.

6. Work in coalition with other groups/agencies who share our mission.

7. Sponsor one large event each year to focus on a timely topic (ex. bilingual education).

8. Maintain a focus on implementing the mission.
