The Story
This is the story of the Virgin of Talpa. It has been passed down for many years from family to family, from generations to generations. It is said that a native went to visit his brother and he gave him a statue of the Virgin Mary. Many years went by when the brother was going to die, so he gave the statue to the his son. His son then took the statue to the church and gave it them.
Time passed when a priest noticed there were a few statues that were old and decaying, because of time. He had the statues burried as is customary with old religious statues. Among those statues was the Virgin Mary, who was very damaged due to very light cane she was made of. The girl in charge of this task put all the statues in a shallow grave, but when it came time to place the Virgin Mary, she saw a beautiful bright white light surrounding the statue. The girl fainted.
Everyone came to her help, they asked what happened. She stated
"Miren cuanta luz sale de la Virgen,"
Or "Look how the light surrounds the Virgin" They looked at the statue. She was no longer decayed. They called all the parishers, people in the surrounding towns, priest, and all high level government people to view her.
It is said that is where the first miracle happened when the candles that were lit by natives stayed on longer than any of the other candles lit by the Bishop. It is also stated that the Virgin was taken a few miles away to the town Mascota, because this town was more important than Talpa, but the very next day. She mysteriously reappeared back in Talpa. This was her second miracle performed. Hundreds of people travel to Talpa from miles and miles away each year to ask for and thank her for the miracles she performs. Talpa de Allende Jalisco is a small town, but very big in faith to the Satisima Virgen del Rosario de Talpa.
