在ISO的官方主頁上並存有兩種形式的語種代號（還有一種在討論中）：

• ISO 639-1:2002 -- Codes for the representation of names of languages -- Part 1: Alpha-2 code (兩個字母的代號)。
• ISO 639-2:1998 -- Codes for the representation of names of languages -- Part 2: Alpha-3 code (三個字母的代號)。
• ISO 639-3: -- 討論中。
