† Masks †

She raised the mask in her hand, and it melded smoothly, almost flawlessly, onto her face. All around her was darkness. She was everywhere and nowhere all at once.

"What mask is this?"

The girl pointed into the black, the image of another girl appearing. "The one for her, there..."
She paused.
"I do not like these masks. They've hidden my face so long that I no longer even know what I look like."

The other voice chuckled softly, distinctly male. "That is a pity...you do not even know what you are, do you?"

Seeing another person through the black, she quickly switched masks. "No..I feel as though I'm putting on a play for the Gods...and I am not positive as to whether it is a comedy or merely a divine preformance."

"A comedy, I think...for what is more amusing than watching the troubles of others?"

"..many things."

"Such as?"

She finally saw an empty room in the void. She removed her mask, her face still in the dark.
"...even here I am shadowed."

"Will you not answer me?"

"Who are you?"

"I am you, but not you. I'm your mind."

She shuddered.
"Will you leave me to myself?"

A sinister grin,
"Of course not."

"...then I will have to rid myself of you."
