S M E T       (Cyclic Meditation)-  Yoga in capsule form

SMET is yoga in capsule form. It emphasizes Karma_Yoga,where work is worship incorporating  the three cardinal principles of yoga- relaxing the muscles, slowing down of the breath and calming down of the mind. SMET implies Self Management of Executive Tension , as it was thought that executives only have tension. It can be practiced by any body having tension. It is in fact yoga in capsule form. There are two variants of S M E T, the35 minutes practice and the 20 minutes practice. It is technically known as cyclic meditation.

Meditation is an exercise in consciousness. There are hundreds of known systems of meditation. All systems  are based on the two faculties of human mind- awareness and relaxation. The sakshi bhava and prajna bhava. Depth of perception, expansion of awareness and relaxation is the key. That is why meditation is defined as the uninterrupted flow of awareness in relaxation. But meditation has  limitation.-Stagnation.

While we sit in meditation our mind is established in awareness of the object but a little after we start , thought waves distracts the flow just like the moonlight is covered by the clouds. This is the case with all,  as the human mind is said to be a flow of thoughts. The more the number of thoughts the more the congestion . The objective of meditation is to reduce the number of thoughts and make the mind light. The energy equation can be given as “ ER = ES + EL. Our system automatically releases certain level of energy to be utilized for our day to day works as well as for the autonomic functions of our systems. Thus ER is the energy release and ES is the energy spent on activity.  EL is the energy load on head which is causing restlessness in the form of random thoughts.

Meditation or yoga aims at reducing the EL by either increasing ES or reducing ER, keeping other things constant. Yoga aims at conservation of energy by reducing ER.

Cyclic meditation is a technique wherein the stagnations are broken at intervals by administering frequent stimulants. The system is developed by VYASA, Bangalore, a deemed University for Yogic Sciences,  recognized by UGC. The Karika on Mnadukya Upanishad says” Laye Sambhodaye Chittam, Vikshiptham  Samaye Punaha:” meaning address and stimulate the sleeping mind and relax again and again. This key is employed in cyclic meditation . That a 35 minutes practice of cyclic meditation gives rest equal to that of 3 hours of continuous sound sleep has been scientifuically established based on research .

After a week"s  practice it is common experience that:

- The mind becomes calm and light.

- The practitioner remains energetic through out the day.

- Even after a day 's continues strenuous work one can retain a feeling  of freshness
  during the evenings.

- A feeling of well being dawns in the mind.

- The practitioner does not feel any type of fatigue.

- And during night one gets sound sleep.

- Emotional stability, i.e. anger, frustration etc gets reduced.

- A pessimists mind graduates to optimism without any over effort.

All said, it is an ideal practice for  men and women  of all ages as lives are seethed with stresses and tensions of the present times. Introduced in our daily discipline it can work wonders.

  Yogacharya Govindan Nair

Born in 1908 at Kuttipuzha near Aluva. Passed M D in Homeopathy.  He was working in Burma. In 1942 when tha Japanese conquered Burma, came  back to India walking. There after he joined the Press Trust of India. Retired as Manager  of  PTI in 1966.

Authored the following books.

1. Yogavidya  2. Arogyavum Deerghayusum. 3. Hatha Pradeepika

4. Yoga Prakruti Chikitsa.  5. Yoga patavali.

All published by DC Books Kottayam

Sri. Govindan Nair was interested in Yoga and Naturopathy even when he was very young boy. He had more than 75 years of practical experience in Yoga and Naturopathy and had become a paradigm of yoga when he entered eternal samadhi on 07.09.2001 at the age of 93. He breathed for yoga, spoke of yoga and dreamt of a future progeny established in yoga. The previous night of his samdhi , he called all his  children to his side and advised as his last word "find time to practise yoga daily asyou find time for daily bath".

Any write up on yoga will be incomplete if it  excludes the name of Yogacharya Govindan Nair . Eventhough he never claimed to possess any sidhis, he was leading a hermit-like life mostly spending his time in a small hut which he used to call parnasala. In the 93 year old span of life he  became guru for  many people who could find more value for their lives thanks to his advice on Yoga and Naturopathy. When Yoga gurus preferred publicity, he remained aloof from the rat race unconcerned about publicity. A true disciplinarian to the core he shunned away the cheat gimmicks of the pseudo yogis. When I showed more interest in spirituality , he advised me like this," You being a householder, too much interest in spirituality is not good. Spirituality and materialism are like the two wheels of a chariot. The chariot will go straight only when both the wheels rotate at the same speed. So is the case with life." Those who have come across him will admit that he was a truly practical man giving the right direction to his disciple. Once he told me  I dont want to impose my discipline on you, still I would advice you to adopt the principle of yoga and naturopathy and whenever any deviation is observed dont get disappointed, but try to come back to the principle and gradually establish in them. It is not exaggeration,  he lived on 2 spoonfuls of rice a day; did not take tea or coffee or intoxicants and could even fast for days together. He completed his book " Arogyavum Deerghayusum" in a week, fasting and he said my pen will never move unless I have experienced. If you go through the pages of Yogavidya, you can find the persons sincerity and frankness. The lessons on pranayama are very practical and safe which one can practice without the help of a guru. From my experience I can say that probably this may be the only one text which can guide as guru even in the absence of the person. That is the meticulous care he has shown in expaining postures and pranayama.

The website Yogavidya is dedicated to him. In yoga the role of a guru is not as a spoon feeder but as a guide. And let the site lead the genuine aspirant to the right path.

Whatever I can achieve through yoga is dedicated unto the lotus feet of my great guru.

Let his dream come true.
