Folklore
Once upon a time there was a poor girl's older brother and younger sister
that live near the pond. They lost their parents early in life but were pretty girl
and intelligent boy. The boy worked as an odd-jobber of a landowner and lent
a book as a pay and study hard. The girl helped him. After a few years he was
going for kwago(the highest-level state examination to recruit ranking officials
during the Choson Dynasty) but couldn't get traveling expenses. The pretty
girl served a maidservant to a landowner's house for earning traveling expenses.
Somehow, he started for hanyang(Seoul now). By the way, the landowner's son
raped the girl. She killed herself by jumping into the pond from shame. After all
the girl's older brother passed kwago and knew that his younger sister is not
existent any more when he arrived his hometown(kyungsan). And then he threw
away everything and followed her. Neighborhood gossip had spread and the
pond named NamMeaJi(Brother and Sister Pond) to memorialize two poor girl's
older brother and younger sister.
