There are a lot more study materials available for W2K.  Also, only the XP
Pro exam is out right now.  If you wanted to get your full MCSE on XP/.NET
you would have to wait until the .NET exams come out which is supposed to be
spring of 2003.  Finally, there are a lot more companies running Windows
2000 right now.
So I'd say W2K unless you have a compelling reason to choose otherwise.

Subject: Beware of MCP Magazine
Beware of MCP Magazine.  Your "free" subscription is a guise to get your
name and address so that they can sell it to other companies.  If you agree
to get the magazine be prepared to be bombarded with junk mail.  The name of
my organization is spelled slightly wrong on my MCP Magazine mailing label
and the junk mail comes addressed the same way.
If you receive junk mail that has been sent first class, simply write
"Refused - Return To Sender" on the front and put it back in the mailbox.
The postal office MUST return it to the sender at the sender's expense.
Maybe if they get all their junk mail back, they will get the idea.
If you still want to get the magazine, but want them to stop selling your
name and address send an e-mail to Jane Nicholson (Long)
[[email protected]] and tell them to stop selling your name.
MCP Magazine makes money selling your name and address without your
permission and that is simply wrong.  Let them know.

Subject: Re: MCSE Training Suggestions
Jason,
The costs of enrolling in a training center far outweigh the benefits. These
courses are for people who don't want to sit down and study. They're for
people who want a quick way to a certification. Having completed a 4 year
degree, you don't seem to fit in that catergory.
Consider, that for a fraction of the price you could set up a home network
which will give you valuable hands on experience. Also, you can study in
your in time at your own pace.
Having said that, I would recommend MS Press books as study guides,
transcenders/MS readiness review for practice testing. Also, if you can get
your hands on the MS Resource Kit. It will be of value after your certs too.
All this can be had for a fraction of the cost of a course. And you will
always have the resources after you finish your certs.
cheers,
Jim

I just graduated with an IS degree from a 4 year college.  I am looking to
add some certifications to my degree, specifically MCSE or MCSA.  I'm
wondering if some of you can share your experiences training to pass the
MCSE tests.  Is a training center the way to go, or is it better getting a
good set of books as well as your own server/client network to train to pass
the tests?
I do have good experience on the workstation side (hey, I'm a beta tester!),
but very little on the server side, so I am pretty much a beginner.  Any and
all suggestions would be appreciated, including specific recommendations
for series of books, etc.

Just writing one of my last posts to say Thank You to all of you out there
who answered some of my questions during my very short stay in the newsgroup...
Well, passed 070-216 a couple of hours ago and am finally MCSE! -
I have to say, in all 14 years of my life, I have never written an exam
which has taken so much out of me - it deserves its title... Beast!
For anyone taking it soon, there were 65 questions - 10 select and place, and
I hear, but can not guarantee (although I trust my source implicitly) that
the pass mark for the exam is 620. The exam took 1 hour 45 minutes to complete.
I used CBTNuggets, and the Syngress / Osborne Study Guide, as well as the
Microsoft Readiness review practice questions book. I preferred CBTNuggets
although the Syngress / Osborne book filled in a lot of the gaps the CBT left.
Well, I'm off to study for CCNA...
Best of Luck to all of you,

Good Job! I too am new to this list (1 day!).  Also Christian I wanted to
say you write excellent English. I also have decided to start studying for
the MCSE and am thinking this will be my way to obtaining a computer job. I
have an associates degree in Computer Information Systems (with a 3.5 GPA)
and have decided to go back to school for my bachelors in Management
Information Systems. I'm 43 years old and owe a lot in student loans and
can't even find an entry level help desk job in Portland Oregon USA - we
have the highest unemployment rate in the country. My emphasis was
programming in school and there are zilch entry level programming jobs here.
It seems that prospective employers really like the MCSE certification and
that with my degree will launch my career. Take care.

Hello everybody,
just wanted to let you know that I passed this week 70-210 (860
points) and -215 (940 points).
I have only been lurking in this ng so far but I'll be probably around
for some time so I think a short introduction might be in order.
First name is Christian, I'm 34 years old, single (unless you count my
computers ;-) and I live in germany.
I'm a trained electrician and have worked the last 14 years installing
and repairing machines all around the world (I think the english term
is "field engineer" though I might be wrong)
Lately I've got a bit bored with my work and the traveling wasn't as
much fun as it used to be so I decided to make my hobby into my job
(my first "computer" was a Sinclair ZX-81, anyone here still remember those?).
Since I didn't have any certifications I found it quite difficult to
find a job so I decided to give this MCSE-thingie (which every
employer I talked to seemed crazy about) a shot.
I've started a training course in April which will last for ten
months, if I make it through I'll be CNA for Netware 5.1 (well,
actually I am already CNA since I passed the exam in May) and MCSE
W2K, with a little Lotus Notes, Linux and some other stuff on the
side.
My track will be: 210, 215, 216, 217, 219, 220 and 221 though I'm
considering doing also 218 if this is really giving me the MCSA
certification (I'll have to do a little research on this matter first)
This should be enough for now, I've studied for four weeks straight
for 210 and 215 so I think I'm entitled for a little r&r.
Alanis Morissette is doing a show for me (well, and about six thousand
other people ;-) this evening and it's about time to get on my way.
Monday it's back to study, 216 is next.
bye,
Chris

I wish MS would pay me a dollar everytime I have to read:
"You are the network administrator of your company's corporate LAN."
OJ, I am getting ready to do the same thing to our network here.
Anyways, are you having any MAJOR difficulties that we should know about?
Thanks.

Yep it's me.....
back again after a bit of an absence.
too busy at work to get onto news groups at the mo, so am doing it at home
(how sad!!!!)
Going through a big project of upgrading my work networks to Win2K on
servers and Xp Pro on clients.
Just finshed the AD desing and plan, gonna start the implementation in a few
weeks, then have to upgrade all of the workstations (fun!!)
I'm glad to say that I'm finally putting my Win2K certifications to good
use, and am not so disheartened at the whole MS certification thing anymore
( i got slated for slagging it off  a few months back!!)
Anyway, I'm back so will be replying to posts again ( where i can help)
thanks for the welcome back  -appreciated!!!

I understand your intent is to get example questions that will both test
your knowledge before the test and increase your comfort level going into
the exam.
I suggest Transcender and BeachFrontQuizzer.

Subject: Re: Exam retirements
Joe,
I'm not having any major difficulties - just a few compatability issues with
existing applications - especially accounting apps.
Most of the hardwork has been in the planning and consolodation of the
existing NT4 domains into a what will be a single AD domain.
Documentation has been heavy going as well but once done, should make
administration of the network a lot easier.
There is also going to be quite a behavioural shift in the department, as i
need all changes to be documented by everyone from now on which wasn't done
before.  Group Policies are difficult to document, but is you download the
Intelimirror scenarios from MS they document all GPO settings for you - and
you can just use the spreadsheet to document your settings.
There has been a lot of headbashing on how we are going to approach tings
like user names - will we keep the existing, or move to having email
addresses as users names - stuff like that.
In my experience, the more you plan, the less hassle you get!!
