Subject: Passed 70-215. Advice sought for 70-216
I passed 70-215 yesterday with 880/1000. Now I'm prepping to take 70-216.
I've got the Syngress book for 70-216 which is supposed to be extremely
useful, but I've heard the test is gruelling.
Has anyone taken the MS Course (#2153) in preparation for 70-216, and was it
useful? I do work in the IT department of a company with ~1,800 users and
workstations on a subnetted copper/fibre/RF LAN. It's a Novell environment
and I'm not the network person, but I have had a lot of exposure to what's
going on network-wise.
Should I take the MS Course?

I used the IDG book (isbn# 0764546481) as well as the MOC and plenty of

If you don't have it already, check out the info and print out a copy of the

based)
http://cramsession.brainbuzz.com/cramsession/pdf/microsoft/IE5.X.pdf

Microsoft has a great self-study IEAK course that you can download for FREE.
Check out the info and d/l the files from the links below (watch out for
line wrap)

Make sure you know the differences between Corporate, ISP, and ICP packages.
Offline browsing and synchronization are important as well since these are
new to IE5.
Don't take this test lightly, it was the toughest of the six I've taken thus
far. 55 question, 90 minute time limit an I used all but fifteen minutes
when I took the tests. Wording and details are the key, read each question
carefully before answering.

Hi ... The Answer is YES you will recieve your MCSE......You must
remember Proxy 2.0 is NOT been Retired....so even if you wrote your Proxy in
Jan or Feb of 2001, YOU still get your MCSE in NT4. The next Good  news is
that Proxy 2.0 can also be put towards your Win2000 Certificate if your
going to upgrade...leaving only 6 exams to do......

Hello Everyone (known and unknown),
I have yet to give one more ellective to go for the NT track. I have decided
to give Proxy 2 (70-088). This would be the last for me to be an MCSE. The
question is, will I get my MSCE certificate for NT4 track if I give my test

some time. Probably if it overshoots into 2001, I  again would only be MCP,
according to Microsoft.

that a Braindump would be useful and should be comments from someone who has

wrong answers).
So heres my question - Why is it that we feel so justified in Slamming the
likes of Cheet-sheets and in the same breath defend Transcenders?
You probably weren't around a good few months back when Transcender aka
"Transgender" Corp took a lot of heat over the "Duckbanny" incident.
Go to Dejanews and do a power search on +Transcender +Duckbanny using the
complete archive and you should have some interesting reading. The regulars on
the newsgroup will remember the episode with clarity.
Transcender Corp lost a lot of support in the newsgroup at the time over their
tactics.
It is not beyond the bounds of probability that MS actually supplies test
questions to Transcender Corp. As part of my MCSE studies I used the MS
Readiness reviews and usually about 4 to 5 questions from each of my exams
were identical to those in the Readiness Reviews.
Again for my Exchange exam I used a demo of the MS approved PEP tests. Again at
least 5 of the questions on my Exchange Exam were word for word identical to
those in the MS Approved PEP test.
Is this just incredible coincidence that the MS Approved Guides and Tests
contain actual exam questions? Somehow I serious doubt that "Night Stalker"
will get an answer out of MS concerning Transcender :)
Don't confuse the chastising of posters who clutter the group asking for
pirated Transcenders as "Defending" Transcender Corp! I'd wager that the
majority of newsgroup readers do not agree with Transcender's high prices or
restrictive license agreement, _BUT_ support their right to insist on such for
their product.

MCSE related employment in the hottest US markets has fallen
dramatically in the last 2 months.  I just returned from a job fair
(held today in Seattles Safeco Field) and there were dozens of
experienced MCSE's going from table to table asking about jobs and no
employers offering them. Some employers even put up signs saying "NO IT

The recruiters wanted security guards and dishwashers. In the last three
weeks thousands have been laid off in a rash of dot.com failures. What
few network admin jobs there were in September have been pulled off the
lists (perhaps offered to non residents thanks to the ill timed VISA
extension?) There were 7 training firms there trying to sell MCSE

Totally unsuitable in my opinion.
The chairs were bog-standard "typist" chairs, with wobbly backrests. There

All the monitors were old 14" jobs that meant you had to scroll to read all

I'm planning to start study for the new Windows 2000 MCSE program.
I have purchased the Microsoft Press Windows 2000 MCSE Training Kit
and I have 3 home PCs available.  I also have the Microsoft Windows 2000 Hotkit.
The HotKit comes with Windows 2K professional and Win2k Advanced
server.  The MCSE training kit comes with Windows 2000 Server.
I have home PCs available.  So far, I've only glanced at the books for
a few minutes.
If I install all the software, study the chapters and do all the
exercises in the books, should  that be enough to pass the 4 core
exams or will I need more books and Trancenders?
My company will reimburse me to go to a tech school on my own time.
The only school that has courses that will fit my work schedule costs
approx. $3000, per quarter for 3 quarters.
I would have to pay the $3,000 myself each quarter, then wait a few
weeks after getting my grades back to a reimbursement check for that
quarter.  In the meantime I would still have to pay for the next
quarter.  I would have paid out $6,000 to the school before I got the
first $3000 back for the previous quarter.
I could charge it on a credit card, but I would still incur the costs
of the several months of credit card interest on a balance of
$30000-6000 since they are not going to reimburse me for interest
charges.
The technical school MCSE program runs 9 months from Jan to Sept 2001.
Oddly my company will reimburse the $9000 school fees, but won't
reimburse my costs of a few hundred dollars of self-study materials if
I study on my own and still pass the exams.  They will pay me back for
the costs of any passed MCSE certification exams though.  I think they
are $100 for each Microsoft test.
If I go to the school, I won't be done until Sept 2001.  If I study on
my own,  I could start next week and not deal with commuting to the
school and having the big bill on my shoulders until the company pays
me back. I also would be stuck with the entire bill if I left the
company for any reason before completing the program.
Should I take advantage of the $9000 in tuition reimbursement or study
on my own and get it over with faster?
The school is 8 hours per week for 8-9 months, but I would also waste
at least 2 hours per week commuting to the school.  I'm sure I would
also get at least another 4 hours per week in homework assignments.
If I spent 12 hours a week at home doing self study, shouldn't I be
able to finish the entire MCSE program in less than 9 months and be
done by next spring?

The correct answer is A.  When you use a highly restrictive security
template (hisecdc) windows 2000 domain controllers will only communicate
with other computers running the same IPSec encryption.  Windows NT is not
able to use this kind of encryption for secure intra-inter network traffic.
Therefore, Windows NT 4.0 will be excluded and  unable to communicate with
the Windows 2000 Domain Controller.
For more info check out Chapter 11 in the Windows 2000 Server Trainning Kit.
For the exact page, check out 676 and look at Figure 11.17.

Hello ! Could anyone help me with this ! Exam 70-215
You are the Administrator of a Windows 2000 Domain that has 3 domain
controllers . Each day you use Windows Back up to perform Backup of each of
the Domain Controllers.
You run a Script to make changes to account information In active Directory.
As a result of Error in the script the incorrect User accounts are modified.
Active Directory Replication then replicates the Changed information to the
other two domain controllers.
You want to revert Active Directory to the version that was backed up the
previous Day. What should you do?
Choose One
A: On a single Domain controller use Windows backup and restore the System
State Data. Shut Down and restart the computer.
B: Shut down and restart a single domain controller in Directory Services
restore mode . Use Windows Backup to restore the System State Data . Run
NTDSUTIL Utility , Restart the computer.
C: Shut down and restart a single domain controller by using Recovery console.
Use Windows Back up to restore the System state Data. Exit the recovery
Console . Restart the Computer.
D: Shut down and restart each domain controller by using Recovery console.
Use Windows Back up to restore the Sysvol folder . Exit the recovery Console.
Restart the computer.
The correct answer is B
This will perform an authoritive restore.

would use the formula 256 - 224 = 32.
Therefore valid subnets based on the above example would be:
Subnet
32 144.23.32.1 to 144.23.63.254
64 144.23.64.1 to 144.23.63.254

However I don't know how to calculate the subnets if the mask is greater
than 8 bits for example with 144.23.0.0 with a mask of 255.255.255.128.
If I take 128 away from 256, I get 128.  It doesn't make sense!  I can't
even make up one subnet using the same approach for the first example above.
Yet I know if I use the formula:  2 (to the power of number of masked
bits) - 2 = number of subnets I get 2 (9) -2 = 510 subnets and 2(7) -2 = 126
hosts per subnet.
Can someone show me how I would calculate the valid subnet and address

There is really no point to "upgrading" from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 as
very little will be retained and you will have to reinstall drivers and

Professional.
You can perform an upgrade from Windows NT 4 Workstation or Server to
Windows 2000 Server and retain a number of computer properties including
local accounts. But you cannot upgrade it to a domain controller.
In order to upgrade from Windows NT 3.1 or 3.5 you must first upgrade to
Windows NT 4.0

appreciated.

Subject: Transcender-Flash or Transcender-Cert or both
Hi,
Should I get Transcender-Cert exam simulation alone or should I also buy the
Transcender-Cert & Transcender-Flash combination.
The NT4 Transcender deals have really come down from $149 to $99. Check it
out yourself : http://new.transcender.com/pr/detail.asp?prid=001004
Thanks.

Bookpool almost invariably has the best deals I can find on computer
books... my only problem is they don't have everything I've looked for,
and anything that's even marginally popular they are almost always out
of stock on.
Just the same, I always check there when I'm getting ready to buy.

Just thought I would let everyone know that I ordered my Net Essentials
training kit form Bookpool. It was $35 and came 2 day Fedex for $6 more.
It came in perfect condition and in exactly 2 days. Great deal!

Subject: TCP/IP TEST
I passed the TCP/IP test a week ago. Not by much - got 766.
The exam had 30 questions. Each question was worth a different amount of
points and SOME DIDN'T COUNT. I swear there were a couple questions where
ALL THE CHOICES WERE WRONG. Was this to rattle me or what? I have no proof
all the choices were wrong.
Anyway one left....probably Proxy.
