Kym,
I agree with you about using MS-Press and their kits. However I disagree
with you about the instructor lead training part, maybe this is because I am
an instructor. There are advantages to having a person to answer your
questions.
In my opinion it is too early in the Windows 2000 MCSE 'game' to really trust
anyone other than MS-Press. Wait for the books or choose other electives
that won't time out.

I've always used the Microsoft Training Kits to prepare for exams as I
don't see the point in forking out big $$$ for instructor led courses.
I've just passed my 17-240 combined and thought I would order the 17-219,220
& 221 training kits and knock off the 2000 MCSE.
Guess what ? Good old MSPress seems to have no training kits for these exams
nor do they seem to have them in their due-out-soon tray.
It's got me buggered how Micro$oft can put the pressure on existing MCSE's
to upgrade themselves and not even have the bloody training kits on sale.
Any comments / help ?

My IIS 4.0 book have a Question and an Answer, but I disagree, either I am
missing something or the book is wrong.
Q: You’ve changed your FTP service port to 2121 so as not to conflict with
an FTP proxy running on you machine. Your users complain that they can’t
reach your site now. What should you do?
A: Instruct users to put the port number 2121 after the IP address or
domain name when they connect to your FTP site.
WHAT? How could you add 2121 after an IP address? Then it will look
something like that, IP # 164.106.130.101.2121? This makes no cense to me,
PLEASE help I am loosing it!!! An IP address can only be 4 octets not 5.
Thanks in advance for replies that will set me straight.

Subject: Age Discrimination Seems to be live and well in the uk
I feel it's worth mentioning that age discrimination seems to be live and well
in the UK right now. I've got experience, and qualifications in networking.
Sure i'm no MCSE, but i'm working on it. I'm 21, and can't find work for the
life of me. Over 140 applications have been sent out for various jobs in the
it sector within the last 3 months, ranging from long distance work at minimum
wage, to local work for big money, and everything in between. I'm registered
with 10 of Britains largest IT recruitment agencies, and alongside checking the
net every night for work, i get just about every jobs magazine and paper
available in the northwest of England. And yet of those applications, how many
replies? 100? no, 50? no, not even 20. I've had 9 replies. 6 out and out
"No's". 3 interview offers (one of which was withdrawn when i asked if they
could rearrange the time) and one of which is only a vague possibility because
the recruiter involved doesn't know where he stands on arranging the interview,
if its even available. After pondering on the question for some time, my g-friend
(now expecting) and I have come to the conclusion that the only thing i don't
have compared to others is age. I have reasonable quals, a wide and in depth
skill set and experience, blah blah blah. Considering how basic and low end some
of the work i've gone for is, I find it hard to believe i'm really so
inexperienced or underqualified that employers won't even give me the benefit of
a reply. Because this situation is, well to put it bluntly, pising me off so much,
I thought i'd get your input on the situation. I've attatched a copy of my CV,
and you may feel free to read it. Do you, seasoned experts feel I'm as bad as
employers seem to be leading me to believe? Do you have any ideas as to how i
could improve my prospects, or, even better, are there any prospective employers
on this newsgroup who are interested? I'd love to hear all your views on this
subject, so please, either post your responses here, or send them to me direct

Subject: official response from MS--NT4 track can be completed after Dec 2000!!!!
Just got an answer from Microsoft concerning completion of NT4 track after
December 2000. It CAN be done. All 4 cores retire Dec 31, 2000 but after
that that we can take 2 electives that have not been retired and complete
the NT4 MCSE certification. What a relief for I was not sure if I would be
able to complete all 6 exams by DEC 31, 2000 (have 4 exams left). Below is
the official MS response
Hello,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the requirements for the Windows NT
4.0 MCSE track. If you complete the four core exams: (70-73, 70-68,
70-67, and 70-58). You have the opportunity to still complete the
certification by completing two current elective exams that have not
been scheduled for retirement. For a list of elective exams that are
not scheduled to be retired please visit the following web site for more
information. The elective exams are listed at the bottom of this web
site.

I am confused but it looks like if you have taken the 4 core exams you can
still get your mcse NT4 in 2001 if you take 2 electives that are not

Subject: Re: Jobs in IT
As far as I know Computer Science degrees deal alot more with programming
and software than actual Networking. This is what my BSc university buddies
tell me. Degrees are usually desired because company's tend to attract a
certain class of employee. Its not racist or sexist, but yes, in a job where
it is not needed, I guess you could go as far as saying that it is in fact
discrimination. Experience. All the small companies want it. Why ? Because
they dont have the time (or money) to spend on training their staff and
exposing them to their systems, which is fair. Many bigger company's,
especially company's dealing entirely with networking, are much more willing
to take on begginers. I, for example, am an A+ certified tech and also
2/6ths MCSE. I recently got hired by a global company to do Call Centre
work, while also being exposed to there small ( yet incredibly expensive )
network. (though this company isnt even remotely involved with networking)
In one week, Ive learnt how to back up servers and clients, set up Windows
2000 Professional, install email and network printers in a professional
enviroment. That, immediately, opens many doors for you, and I would advice
trying to go along a similar route. Its working for me ! Remember, that in
this industry you never stop learning. You are always going to have to
upgrade your MCSE, or CNE or whatever else (not A+ though) so you might as
well do a degree in your spare time if you want. What the heck. Believe me,
it can do NO harm !
Kind Regards,
Mark

Hello & tnx for reading this post. Today, I spoke w/ an individual in
our MIS Dept. I advised him that I was currently studying the A+
Cert, then I'll be working on the MCSE and Network + Certs as well.
He informed me that even if you have a degree in Computer Science,
what companies most desire is EXPERIENCE. I'm looking for a career
change into networking, etc. and would like to know if I #1: NEED a
degree in computer science; #2: Are the certifications MORE
important than the degree, and #3: Is it desirable to have BOTH a
degree AND the certifications. However, what if you DON'T have the
degree? I'm new to this field, and would like to get experience to
work my way up. Where should I start?? ANY suggestions are greatly
appreciated.
Tnx in advance,

4 hours, closely. The exam is a set of 4 "sub-exam", one for each of the
core exams that 70-240 stands for. Each of this "sub-exams" has its own
duration and you can take breaks between them.
Also, I saw another post in here that said 4 NT Core tests are required to
take the upgrade test, but MS' Site says just 3 NT tests are required
(Workstation, Server, & Server Enterprise). Who's right?

Subject: Win2K minimum requirements
I am planning to prepare for MCSE Win2000 exams by self-study. At work we
are still with NT4 and have no plans to upgrade.
Early this year I obtained my MCSE (NT4 version) almost entirely by using
Micrsoft press self-training kits on my home network. The good thing with
these kits is that you get the NT4 server and workstation software free
(although they are time-restricted versions). Does anyone know if the
Win2000 kits also come with Win2000 server and professional O/S free?
Also, the PC with the least resources I have at home is a Pentium75 with 16M
RAM. It was slow but okay to run NT4 workstation. Can anyone advise if I
need to upgrade this system. I am not sure what would be the minimum system
requirement for running Win2k Pro and Server.
Would very much appreciate your help.

TCP/IP is an important part of networking, that isn't going to disappear
any time soon. If fact, it will become even more complex when IPv6 is
implemented, so you're better off learning IPv4 (current version) NOW while
it isn't so difficult.
I agree completely. I think it's also important to realize that the TCP/IP
stuff has just been integrated into the other win2k tests. SO, it's not like
you don't have to know it anymore. As I've stated in previous posts, it's not
passing the tests that really matters, it's knowing the material.
