Subject: win2k mcse exam 70-210 clarification
I am a few days away from beginning to prepare for exam 70-210.
I have Microsoft's own book for this exam and have started skimming through
it.
Also, I have been reading up on the details of the exam as posted on
Microsoft's own web site.
On Microsoft's "Preparation Guide for Exam 70-210" web page, under the
heading "Skills Being Measured", there is no mention of any Registry topics
on the exam.
And yet, in the MOC book for exam 70-210, there is an entire chapter on the
registry.
I am hoping I can use the web page as a guide to determine which chapters to
hit hard and which chapters I can skim.
If anyone out there has taken this exam and can comment on how accurate the
web page is, I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I was wondering how those who have NT 4.0 certification as a MCSE will
fare after Dec 31, 2001... Case in point, suppose I do not elect to go for the
WIN2K Cert, and find myself after the Dec31, 2001 with my MCSE certification
now gone...
Can one in this situation still note on their resume:
"Achieved MCSE under NT4.0 in September of 2000"
Does this fly OK on a resume...
I personally believe it does... All this hard work should still count for
something!!
YES I know... get the WIN2k....
STILL the question is a valid one... that will I'm sure be coming up....

These sites helped me a lot, and I have gotten lots of good feedback on

Subject: 70-210 Passed
Well, I got Win2K Pro yesterday.  The exam wasn't that bad.  I've been
using NT4 for about 3-4 years now & I'm a current NT4 MCSE.  I've been
using Win2K Pro for about 8 months (beta & full versions).  To study
for the exam, I scaned through the MS Press book (didn't read the
whole thing, mainly just the new features), read the cramsession (good
stuff here, great job Sean, I really like how you noted all the KB
articles, I'm sure that'll come in handy), but the most important
thing I think that helped me with this exam was my prior NT4 knowledge
& the 8 months of Win2K.  I just hope these new exams keep their
validity & people don't start posting braindump stuff.  There are
several people I know personally that have passed several of the NT 4
exams & have no clue as to what they are doing.  One of them just
finished his 4th exam (completed the cores), then 'dressed up' his
resume to show some things that weren't the 'whole truth'.  Well, last
Tuesday, he started a new job.  Friday they told him they didn't need
him anymore & never to apply with them again.  I hate to see he lost
his job, but a part of me liked knowing that there was someone out
there that caught on to his scam.
Oh well, I took last night off from studying, but I break out the
Server stuff today.  From the things I've seen so far (cramsessions &
using the OS), I don't think this one is going to be that bad either.
I'll let you know!

Subject: Losing at WINS
Hi!  I'm having a problem getting WINS running properly on my home
network.  I have 4 computers running in the same domain, with the PDC acting
as a multi-homed router separating 2 subnets.  One subnet contains the PDC,
a member server and an NT workstation, and the other subnet contains a
member server only.  Both member servers are WINS servers operating in
opposite subnets, configured as push-pull partners of each other.
Addressing is dealt with flawlessly by DHCP, so there are no connectivity
problems among these machines.  Options 003,044 and 046 are properly
configured (I think) as DHCP scope parameters for each subnet.
The problem I need to deal with is the fact that computers on the
opposite side of the router don't appear on the browse list of any computer
on the other side.  I was hoping WINS would be the solution to this issue!?
Each subnet knows who's around locally, but they can't see anything on the
other side of the router.
As far as I can tell, I have the settings of each push-pull partner set
up right, but I'm not really sure if they are actually replicating each
other or not.  When I click the "replicate now" button to initiate an
update, I get a dialogue box that states "The replication request has been
queued".  What exactly does that mean?  Is it a good thing?  Gut instinct
tells me that is likely very bad, but none of the books I have make any
reference to this scenario.
Any pointers would be a real treat, as I'm hoping to write TCP/IP next
week.  Help anyone?  Ken.

Subject: Wording of questions ... tricky?
I've been taking lots of practice tests and found the questions in many of
those to have some tricky wording ... actually problem is I read more in ...
i.e.  I took one test and it had a question with a required outcome and 2
optional outcomes (I hate those questions the worse).  Needed to give a user
access to a workstation (required) and restrict the hours logging in
(optional).  Solution was use User Manager to create account and set login
hours ... everything in solution directions was correct except it was
correct for User Manager for Domains, not local UM!
What do I find tricky?  First, who administers a domain and then creates a
local account on a local workstation?  I sure don't!  If I want to restrict
a person to a workstation I give them a domain account and restrict them to
(up to 8) a specific workstation!!!
What else do I find deceptive?  Give instruction for doing something, such
as "click on button labeled Hours" ... there is no such button in UM ...
sorry, just my venting!
Do the actual tests follow this tricky wording?  Am I the only one that gets
screwed up by  this?  I know what to do/how to do, it's just the stupid
wording ...
Okay, now I'm just venting, I'll stop.  Thanks for an "ear".

When users log into a Windows NT domain, how are their access permissions
encoded for subsequent examination by the Security Reference Monitor
when they request domain resources after a successful login?
A) Each time a user requests a resource, the SRM searches the SAM to
determine the user's effective permissions for the object requested.
B) Each time a user requests a resource, an access token generated at login
is compared to the ACL for the requested object.
C) Each time a user requests a resource, the SRM checks the ACL for the
requested object against a hashed security key for the user.
D) Each time a user requests a resource, the SRM calculates the user's
effective permissions based on his individual permissions and the groups

Subject: 70 - 068 Exam
Hi All,
I am taking the 70 - 068 (Server in the Enterprise) exam tomorrow evening
but there is one question that I am finding allot of different answers for
and I was wondering could someone please clear this up for me. It is the
question about Field Engineers needing to dial into your RAS server and how
you can make sure that all your passwords and data is encrypted etc.
According to the answers given by the Transender test exams when you are
using Win  NT 3.51 , Win NT 4.0 , Win 95 and Windows For Workgroups 3.11
machines to dial into another machine belonging to this group Microsoft
Encryption Authentication will encrypt passwords and data by default. On
this basis for example if you choose the option " allow any authentication
including clear text" and once you are using any of the machines listed
above the passwords and data is encrypted.
But I have also read other answers from various practice tests and other
people's view and they claim that once you are using any of the listed
machines above only the passwords are encrypted by default and the only way
to get the data encrypted is to choose the option " require Microsoft
encrypted authenitication " and then to choose "Require data encrypted".
Any suggestions on this would greatly appreciated,
Regards,
Colm

Subject: RPC Problem
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone had a quick fix to a NT4.0 problem with IIS4.0!
I'm runnung NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 5 and have set it up on a laptop
with the intention of playing around with Internet Information Server 4.0.
The PROBLEM is that I get this when I go into DNS Manager when trying to ADD
my server:
"The RPC server is unavailable"
I get a red X thru the server and cannot go any further????
I have reloaded the RPS service and DNS and I still can't get by it????
I would appreciate any help!!  Please e-mail me directly if you would
Thanks for your time!!!
Dan
