March 18
Happy St. Patrick's Day! Yes I know it was yesterday, but it's today for you guys so
I'm celebrating a day late. Actually I've been celebrating all weekend. Friday night we went out for one of the
teacher's birthday. We had AMAZING all you can eat Japanese buffet. The steak was fantastic! I thought I had
kicked my love for red-meat. I haven't really had any good beef since I got here and I can't think of more than
two occaisions in the past two months that I've eaten red-meat, so I was pretty sure I could live without it. This
was exciting for me because I'm starting to go vegetarian, not by any conscience choice, but just because I'd rather
eat vegetables and I don't enjoy meat that much anymore. So yeah, then we went to this buffet and the steak was
so good I ate more meat in one meal than I honestly have eaten in the past two weeks. It was ridiculously good and
we all gorged ourselves because you don't get beef like that anywhere else in China. We paid for it though, that
was the most expensive restaurant I've gone to here, but it was worth it! Anyways, after dinner we went to Paddyfield's
our local Irish pub for some Bailey's cheesecake. We sang some rousing pub songs and that got us pumped to do some
dancing so we topped the evening off by gittin' jiggy with it at a nearby club. Okay, it's late and I've had a long
weekend, so the writing isn't great, I'd apologize but I don't feel about it. :) Then what? Oh, Saturday. Well,
I got suckered into chaparoning a group of students going to a rock concert yesterday. It's a long story but anyways
I took 20 kids to a sort of a battle of the bands concert at one of the other international schools for the evening.
It was a good time. I was very impressed with the instrumental ability of the kids. The vocals sounded like bad
kareoke for the most part, but no one else seemed to mind so I didn't say anything. These kids have been far too
indoctrinated by kareoke, they don't even know what constitutes bad singing! Oh well, at least they aren't self-
conscience about singing in public. I had planned to have everyone over for dinner Saturday, but because of the
concert I had to move it to today. I had the Winnipeg crew over for steak and Guiness followed by some Irish cream
pie. It was a good evening, our parties are always so much fun even if they're low key, and after Friday we needed
a few quiet nights so it all worked out well. The weather's been very Irish lately and I have to say, yesterday
was the perfect Irish day. I woke up to light grey skies and a light misting rain. It was as Irish as you could get
in China. So that was my weekend, three days of St. Patrick's partying, good times! I've almost run out of clean
green shirts!
