September 3

The honeymoon is over. Not that I'm not still having the time of my life, but the reality of work has finally set in. School has become all consuming, and that's not a bad thing, but some days it feels like I'm missing out on experiencing China because all I'm doing is going to school and coming home occasionally to sleep. This weekend we were able to go into Guangzhou on Saturday night to hang out at our new favourite jazz bar. It's very cool! I never would have imagined that I would enjoy (let alone frequent) a jazz bar, but China's changed me already! The bar used to be a dance club, so the design is very industrial (much more my style). You walk up a flight of stairs to get in and about half way up, this heavy steal door slides open to reveal a red lit, plexiglass catwalk. So you go in and walk across this catwalk where another steal door opens for you. Then you go through a little quiet lounge and across another catwalk, down a candle lit stairway and into the basement. There's a stage with live music, and very good music at that. There are U-shaped couches around the tables, and they are so comfortable! So that's where we go to unwind, and with some of the students we have, we need to destress often! My 28 grade 7's are wonderful, they're still quiet and unsure of how to act now that they're in high school. My 30 grade 8's are a different story. They are every bit of what you would expect from grade 8's in North America. They talk ALL the time, except when I ask a question. The boys are a bit wild, they broke my printer tray on Friday. And they always try to negotiate their way out of everything I assign. My grade 9, 10, 11 & 12's are all fantastic and the classes are a lot smaller. I still don't have working internet in my apartment, I had it for about 2 hours and then it disappeared, so I apologize that my updates are few and far between right now. I will be better about emailing once I have internet at home.
