I had my first tourist experience last weekend. We went to the Shun-de (I misspelled it last time) on Saturday. It was pretty cool seeing all the traditional Chinese architecture and it was the first sight-seeing thing we've done since we got here. I put some pictures up in the picture section. Unfortunately it was raining all day, and so the pictures aren't great quality. I inherited a new pet today which is kind of cool. One of my adorable grade 7's who speaks very little English gave me a hampster that his mom won't let him keep because it stinks so much. It's true the cage reaks, but that's just because it hasn't been cleaned in awhile. So right now he's living in my science lab and I'm looking for a pet store that carries stuff for hampsters. It's interesting how specific shops are here. There's a cat and dog pet store and a fish and turtle store, but I haven't found one that carries hampster supplies. So the search continues. I have an amazing Chinese prodigy piano student, which if you'll allow me, I need to brag about for just a minute. I can't believe I actually got a student this good, she really blows my mind! She's 9 years old and is in grade 5 RCM. Now just to compare for those of you who don't understand how exceptional this is, I was 13 or 14 when I was in grade 5 RCM. And it's not like her parents are slave drivers, like you'd expect, she just loves piano so much and she retains everything! So anyways, I'm having a blast with her. This weekend I'm hoping to do an IKEA shop in Guangzhou and hopefully that means I'll be able to outfit my apartment with a lot of the things I'm still lacking. I mean, the place is furnished, but it leaves a lot to be desired. I'm hoping to pick up a shelving unit and couch among other things. Tomorrow is girls night, a bunch of the other new female teachers are getting together for pizza and movies at one of the girls apartments, so that should be fun. We have to work on Saturday morning though, so it'll have to be an early night. Saturday is our Open House at school, so all the parents will be there to meet the teachers and see the school and stuff. That should be interesting, I've yet to meet any of the parents and I don't know what to expect from them. I'm sure there'll be a lot of smiling and shaking of hands though. The weather has changed drastically here. Last weekend marked the end of our summer and a definiate shift to fall. It's rained most of the week, and the average high is probably in the low twenties now. The humidity feels a lot lower despite the rain. It's no longer necessary to change your shirt three times a day anymore, sometimes you can even wear the same one the whole day - those are good days!
