Latin

A friend of mine and I decided to learn Latin one day in July of 99. I think our motivation was just to be cute on IRC. Somewhere along the way I decided to get something out of it. I'd been wanting to learn a second language for about 9 months (Spanish). It seems like a noble thing to do, there are so many people around me that know more than one language. And some that only know one, and it's not English.

I listen to Latin speech tapes in the car. I have a "Latin/English, English/Latin" translating dictionary, and an "Everyday Latin" book that I carry with me in my book bag. We'll see how it goes.

Everybody asks me "why learn Latin, it's a dead language". Well, I don't think it's dead, it may be sleeping, and it may never 'wake-up', but it's not dead like ancient Egyptian is dead! It's also really cool to learn the root meaning of English words that are Latin, and let me tell ya, there are a lot of them. I've learned that Latin is mostly used as a written language today. This is why I have this page. This is where I am practicing my written Latin. Most of what is on this page is from a book somewhere, some I've tried to come up with myself. I have not figured out how to "conjugate the verb" yet, but I will. I think ultimately I'd like to learn Spanish, but for now I'm having fun with Latin, and that what it is all about "having fun"!

Since I have started learning Latin, I've met a lot of people that know 'some' Latin. Are you one of them?
