Chinese New Year is based both on the lunar and solar calendars. The traditional Chinese calendar was based on a lunar cycle,
which are the dates following the regular appearance of the full moon.
During the days of Chinese New Year celebrations, people would put on new clothes.

Every family is busy preparing food for the holidays before the New Year's Day. On the New Year's Eve, all members of the family would gather for the family dinner. Married couples would give out red envelopes with money inside for children as their New Year gift.
In San Francisco's Chinatown, there are
street fairs during Chinese New Year.
There's even
parade
in Downtown.
