(From README)
What is Socks2HTTP ?
Socks2HTTP is an agent converting SOCKS v.5 requests into HTTP requests and tunnelling them through HTTP proxy. SOCKS protocol allows programs to traverse firewalls on any port number and is used by many popular programs, like Napster, MSN Messanger, CRT(telnet client) and many others. Many companies restrict firewall traversals only to HTTP requests, disabling SOCKS proxy. Socks2HTTP provides a lightweight SOCKS server for the SOCKS client, performing its connection through an HTTP proxy. If a client program does not support SOCKS protocol Socks2HTTP can still be used by using a free "socksificator": SocksCap32 program from www.socks.nec.com Socks2HTTP was developed by Totalrc.net, all support issues should be directed to [email protected]. Participants: Host, HTTP Proxy, Client.
How it works ?
Client computer runs socks2http.exe, a software agent to tunnel SOCKS requests through HTTP proxy. Client specifies localhost:1080 as its SOCKS proxy and then runs as usual. If a client program does not support SOCKS protocol Socks2HTTP can still be used by using a free "socksificator": SocksCap32 program from socks.nec.com You have to specify the host name and port number for your HTTP proxy. If your proxy is configured using proxy autoconfiguration script you can specify the name of this script(from your web browser). If your HTTP proxy requires userid/password you have to specify them as well. You can also specify the connection method: CONNECT or POST. CONNECT method is generally faster but some proxy servers restrict its usage to certain ports so it may not work for you. POST method requires using a gateway. The default gateway: www.totalrc.net on port 80 is specified on the configuration screen. At this point this is the only gateway set up for this operation.
User interface
Socks2HTTP is an agent program that has practically no user interface. When runnig it displays a small icon on the taskbar. Clicking the right mouse button on the icon brings up a menu, letting the user terminate the agent or configure the program during runtime.
Shareware, 15 days period.
