Subject: Anonymous checking
209.198.242.55--->
Message: How do you check if a proxy is anonymous?
Use a cgi script in a webpage to tell client IP (proxy IP) and HTTP_X_FORWARDED environment var?
If this var is empty, it's anonymous, else, it isnt. Is it how you know it?
Thanks.

Some people prefer more anonymity and look for proxies that don't mention the fact that they are proxies, e.g. the VIA field or host name that have in it's name the words proxy, cache or similar.
The big QUESTION is why MP does not tell us what it considers anonymous. That info must be disclosed. I find cases where I do "test all" and some proxies show anon = no, yet if I test them individually some come back as anon = yes.
Not reassuring, IMHO
A good feature to have in MP is to set the level of anonymity beyond a must be alway "no IP or computername. Another good feature is to view the results of individual anonymity checks so you know what the proxy is returning without changing constantly the proxy and calling the envelope checks.

It would be nice to have an ongoing technical discussion about MultiProxy. That way we could get "under the hood" a bit, and better understand the program and it's limitations.

Remember to customize your Active X and Java Permissions in your browser, I'd suggest setting to prompt before they run.The A4 website has links to some good IP detection sites, particularly the rental-web.com one.

212.219.39.131--->
Message: Hello, everybody!
How Mproxy test anonymity?
With packet viewer (CommView, SpyNet) we can discover something interesting.
For example, my Mproxy - 127.0.0.1:8080, back-port - 8081,
proxy from proxylist - masterman.stc.ac.uk:80 (212 219.39.131:80).
Below - decoded Mproxy/Internet dialog:
packet "my_real_IP_addr:1098 => 212 219.39.131:80"
"GET http://my_real_IP_addr:8081/2200427476 HTTP/1.0
Host: none
Pragma: no-cache
Connection: close
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.72 [en] (Win98; U)"
packet "my_real_IP_addr:8081 <= 212 219.39.131:4045"
"GET /2200427476 HTTP/1.0
Via: 1.0 MASTERMAN
Connection: close
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.72 [en] (Win98; U)
Host: none
Pragma: no-cache
Connection: Keep-Alive"
packet "my_real_IP_addr:1098 <= 212 219.39.131:80"
"HTTP/1.0 502 Proxy Error ( Software caused connection to abort )
Via: 1.0 MASTERMAN
Pragma: no-cache
Cache-Control: no-cache
Content-Type: text/html
Proxy Reports:
10053 Software caused connection to abort
An error occurred while trying to retrieve your URL.
This error could have been caused by:Ba"
Suddenly Mproxy think:
Ou! masterman.stc.ac.uk:80 - working & anon!
Hmm...
But I must say MP potential more better than A4P

Message:
My "hmm..." above mean:
MP's anonymity (and working) checks hasn't defense against foolish cases.
When MP agrees off-line check and breaks proxylist - it is trifle.
Real trouble:
after MP v.0.8 only test anonymity is "connect back to my computer",
but MP absolutely ignores your ISP. As result - different check's errors,
"sos, all red!", "sos, no anon!", etc.
Little experiment with one of my ISP:
make minimum proxylist: masterman.stc.ac.uk:80, cache.nexicom.net:8080;
go to inet; "test all" => masterman = no-anon, nexicom = anon;
test individual => masterman = no-anon, nexicom = anon;
test individual some times => nexicom = no-anon too;
"test all" => masterman = no-anon, nexicom = anon again
(note: masterman, nexicom = really anon).
CommView show:
my ISP's ns server sometimes replaced remote proxies in check's dialog,
but I am not anon for my ISP...
Kernel: MP must recognize own ISP and know what to do with it;
or - include test anonymity via URL again.
Happy new year, MultiProxy!
Happy new year, everybody!

Message: I have to add I leave the "Connect back" option unchecked. Before I did this, quite awhile ago now, MP would divulge my IP, or simply abort the connection. Why? I have no idea. But since I disabled "CB" I have maintained anonymity and connections, except of couse depending on the proxy being used, whether Java is enabled or not and the occasional OS crash (big Bill Gates hurrah here).

Message: Dear Mr. K:
Set all the protocols in your browser to localhost or 127.0.0.1. Set all the ports to 8088. Disable Java and Java Script in your browser. Do not enable the "Connect back" option in MP, just check the "Don't check" option and use www.rental-web.com/~azuma/cgi-bin/env.cgi to check for anonymity. If you are still transparent then either you have interference from another program or your browser is goofy. Try IE 5.01 or Opera 5.01. I'm using Opera alot now and it's great. Always remember to disable Java, and use WebWasher to block pop-ups and other ads. And now back to our feature presentation . . .

unknown--->
Message: Hi,
Thanks for advice- I actually got it working, sort of. Earlier posts and some people were saying that the application didnt actually check the proxys were anonymous all that successfully.
To investigate I went and used Advanced Administrive Tool's proxy checker (its shareware) to first check which proxys were anonymous. There were discrepancies between Mulitproxy and AAT. It was then just a question of trying out edited lists before importing to Multiproxy. Now i've got about 5 good, working proxys, (is this enough?), that beat any of the proxy checkers so far.
I sort of like Java and stuff, so maybe I should use an earlier version of Multiproxy thats had plenty of roadtesting?
I cant see how the guy isnt motivated- this site, the freeware, etc dont administer themselves y'know. Maybe the author is working on something new or perhaps there are marital difficulties? Maybe theyre sick? I dunno. Its his/her business. No point in having a go just cos they're not around 24/7.
Thanks for help everyone.
